Project Description

The COSMO CubeSat is a 6U CubeSat to precisely measure the Earth鈥檚 magnetic field. Its measurements shall be used to update the World Magnetic Field Model (WMM) which is used in a variety of realms including many smartphone applications. The COSMO team is currently building and testing the flight magnetometer instrument; the first satellite is planned to be launched in 2025.

The goal of this SPUR project is the development of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) software. The GSE software will help with the development and ground testing of the magnetometer instrument. Some of the tasks for this project are determining a protocol for the commands; developing a program that communicates with the payload using a serial port and a TBD command set; creating a user interface to control the software; and conducting first analyses of the test data.

Special Requirements

Knowledge of at least one programming language like C#, C++ or Python is necessary. Basic understanding of data bus communication between several devices is helpful. Experience in data analyses and plotting using MATLAB or Python is good to have.
