Project Description
US natural gas pipeline infrastructure has been serving the nation for decades, providing critical services and resources for energy flow. Many systems have exceeded their intended design life with increasing vulnerability to failure. The Center for Infrastructure, Energy and Space Testing (CIEST) is leading an international project to investigate the performance of novel pipeline repair-in-place technologies. The student will join CIEST to conduct full-scale testing of pressurized pipe samples and conduct experimental protocols to assess the performance of renewed pipes under external service loading conditions including traffic-induced vibrations, lateral deflections, and temperature-induced axial deformation. This project is taking place in CIEST's structural dynamics and materials testing laboratory. Hands-on laboratory experience will be gained through full-scale tests on 10-ft long sections of 12-in. diameter pipe, including component design, construction, and wide range of instrumentation. The student will have the opportunity to analyze collected data, aggregate results, and aid in report preparation, including potential authorship on technical reports and publications.
