Academic Course Map for Classics (B.A.)

  Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics (CLAS) at ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ emphasizes knowledge and awareness of the literature, culture and thought of the ancient Mediterranean world, the social, cultural, religious and political history of ancient Greece and Rome, and the art and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean world, including Egypt and the Near East.  In addition, students completing the degree in classics are expected to acquire the ability and skills to read, understand and interpret written documents and works of literature in translation and/or in the original Greek and Latin, to communicate in spoken and written form clearly and effectively, and to read and think critically.

Classics majors are challenged to acquire a set of skills in the analysis and presentation of diverse forms of evidence, that stand to serve them in their daily, civic and professional lives.   The field of Classics is multicultural: it involves the study of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, but also of the many peoples with whom the Greeks and Romans interacted in central and eastern Europe, north Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East.  The field of Classics is interdisciplinary because it crosses the boundaries of literature, philosophy, material and visual culture, history, and religion to study the world of antiquity.  Classics majors leave ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ with marketable skills that enable them to read critically, think analytically and communicate articulately.
