Sustainable Photography: A Nexus of Conservation and Visual Media
March 4th – 11:30 AM; ATLAS 311 (The Brakhage Center)
Christi spent over six years in Madagascar, working at the nexus of sustainable development, conservation and the media. She helped build Madagascar’s first solar-powered community radio station, produced radio programs for rural communities, and managed the education program for Blue Ventures (), teaching youth in Madagascar to use media to promote environmental action. She helped found a community-managed forest in northwest Madagascar, and recently co-founded the non-profit Atsika () to support this and other community-based conservation projects in the region.
As a photographer, Christi uses images to inspire public awareness on issues of conservation and development. As a graduate student in journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder, she works as Multimedia Editor and reporter for The Boulder Stand ( and ), as well as Teaching Assistant for photojournalism professor Kevin Moloney and Research Assistant for professor of religious and media studies Nabil Echchaibi.
Christi dreams of doing multimedia reporting on conservation and human development stories on an international level, while continuing to work in sustainable development and media in an advisory capacity. She has also studied in Chile as a Rotary exchange student, worked in Kenya and Tanzania as an overseas studies trip leader, and studied in the Dominican Republic while interning for a human rights non-profit. Christi speaks four-and-a-half languages.
