CAS Event Report: Rajeev Taranath Concert & Workshop

In October, CAS helped sponsor an Indian music concert and workshop as part of our year-long "Listening to Asia" theme. The two-part event featured Rajeev Taranath, one of the world's leading exponents of the sarod. Read more in our event report:

The Rajeev Taranath Concert in Old Main at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012 was a huge success.  The audience of approximately 130 people was treated to a rare performance by one of India鈥檚 foremost North Indian classical music artists.  The audience was a mix of CU students (Caucasian and Indian), CU faculty and staff, and members of the Boulder community.   The audience enjoyed a brilliant performance with excellent guided description of what to listen for in the music.

The 2-hour Indian music workshop on Sunday morning, October 21, 2012, was equally excellent. Rajeev Taranath was masterful in guiding the approximately 20 participants (CU students, members of the Boulder community) through elements of raga and melody in North Indian classical music.  I was so impressed with the profound depth of Taranath鈥檚 teaching in the workshop that I am pursuing ways to bring him back to CU during the 2013-2014 academic year for a two-week residency to teach College of Music students Indian music and the Indian approach to teaching/learningmusic.
