My research centers on the rich phenomena that occur in the outer atmospheres
of cool stars, with a focus on the mysterious processes by which mass is
ejected from red giant and supergiant stars. I use physics-based approaches
to analysis large multi-wavelength data-sets (from radio waves, mid-IR, all
the way through to the far-ultraviolet) which we have obtained from
ground and space based observatories. I specialize in spectral line
formation and radiative transfer to extract the maximize information from
high-resolution spectroscopy. Currently I am constructing
the first detailed semi-empirical atmospheric models,
from the photosphere to the circumstellar envelope, of supernova progenitors
like Betelgeuse and Antares.
I also have a deep interest in evidence-based approaches to university science
education.
