Grad Student Joins Groundbreaking Expedition to Study Arctic Climate

Sean Horvath

Graduate student Sean Horvath was one of 20 applicants from numerous countries selected by the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists to participate in MOSAiC School 2019.

During a six-week trip this fall, Hovarth will travel to Norway to spend time on a research vessel in the Arctic Ocean. The trip will give him access to data that can be obtained by ship-based research.

鈥淚鈥檓 thrilled and incredibly honored to have been selected to participate in this groundbreaking expedition,鈥 Hovarth said. 鈥淚鈥檓 sure it will be a tremendous and humbling learning experience, and I look forward to sharing insights gained with my cohort here at CU.鈥

Hovarth and other MOSAiC School participants will be stationed on the icebreaker RV Akademik Fedorov. This ship will be supporting the vessel RV Polarstern, which will be frozen into drifting sea ice. Scientists on both ships will investigate the relationships between atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, bio-geochemisty and ecosystems with the Arctic climate. This will be a great opportunity for Hovarth to gain experience in polar research while working alongside Arctic climate experts.
