Congratultions CINE Graduates!

Please join us on Friday, May 7th at 2:00pm as we congratulate the class of 2021 graduates from the Department of Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts!

This will be held virtually over our social media channels (links below) and is open for anyone to view.

We are proud of the work that these graduates have produced during their time with our department and anxiously await all of the wonderful accomplishments they have in store for themselves. This commence ceremony will aim to acknowledge each and every student and end their undergraduate careers with celebration!

On April 26th, at 7:00pm, join us in celebrating the work of the Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts' graduate student work!

Filmmakers include McKenzie Blake, Emily Van Loan, Eileen Roscina, and Madeline Plumley.

McKenzie Blake is a filmmaker whose work revolves around personal memory, narratives and found footage. She works with digital and analog formats as well as experimenting with the process of animation.

Emily Van Loan is an experimental filmmaker and artist. They create diaristic, autobiographical works with the intention of fostering connections between audience and maker or perhaps within an audience.

Eileen Roscina is an experimental filmmaker, artist and naturalist based out of Denver, Colorado. Through the study of biophilia, her work examines human’s spiritual and social (dis)connection with nature, and seeks to raise questions about realizing a radically different metaphoric mapping of time, space and our place in the world.

Madeline Plumley is a filmmaker from Louisville, Kentucky. She believes that art is labor and the working class is the only creative class. She works at making films that are a part of the celebration of life and labor.

The MFA in Film is an interdisciplinary endeavor between the Art and Art History Department and the Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts Department and offers the best of both worlds.

First Person Cinema Welcomes Alex Rivera - (Rescheduled for Wednesday night, 3/17)

For borders to be enforced as sites of social and material control, there must always be an accompanying system of visual production. Today, that system includes drones, infrared cameras, biometrics, and more. For over twenty-five years Alex Rivera has been making moving images to contest those systems with visions of a different kind of border. In this brief talk and screening, Rivera will discuss and present selections of his award-winning moving image work, including, Papapapá (1995), Why Cybraceros? (1997), The Borders Trilogy (2003), Sleep Dealer (2008), and The Infiltrators (2019).

Join a conversation with cinematographer Nancy Schreiber A.S.C. and production designer Jonah Markowitz, to discuss their role in the film Mapplethorpe directed by Ondi Timoner.

Synopsis:

A look at the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989.

BIOS

Nancy Schreiber, ASC

Nancy Schreiber, ASC, is an award-winning cinematographer based in Los Angeles and New York. She was the fourth woman ever voted into membership in the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers and the first to receive the ASC's President's award in 2017. Schreiber was honored with the Best Dramatic Cinematography Award at Sundance for NOVEMBER and that award for MY AMERICA...OR HONK IF YOU LOVE BUDDAH. Schreiber garnered an Emmy nomination for Best Cinematography on HBO's Celluloid Closet, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for CHAIN OF DESIRE and was also one of Variety's 10 DPs to watch.

Shreiber's work in television is currently being seen on Starz's P Valley and was recently seen on Shondaland on ABC's STATION 19. Previously her work was been seen on ABC's The Family with Joan Allen and Alison Pill, and the FX show, Better Things, starring Pamela Adlon. She also was the Director of Photography on the HBO series, The Comeback, with Lisa Kudrow and set the look for TV pilots such as In Plain Sight, for USA Network. Schreiber still enjoys shooting the occasional documentary, including CNN Film's critically acclaimed LINDA RONSTADT: SOUND OF MY VOICE, produced by James Keach and directed by her long-time collaborators, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman. Schreiber's narrative work includes MAPPLETHORPE directed by Ondi Timoner, MOVING PARTS directed by Emilie Upczak, and THE NINES directed by John August.

Schreiber taught advanced cinematography at the American Film Institute in 2010-2011 and has guest lectured extensively worldwide. She also served on the board of ASC for seven years, the board of NYWIFT, the foundation board of Women In Film, and is a huge supporter and member of Film Independent, IFP/Gotham and IDA. Schreiber is also a member of the Television Academy and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Jonah Markowitz

Jonah has been designing and art directing studio and independent feature films, television shows, as well as commercials for the past 12 years.

His recent credits include MAPPLETHORPE, HBO's Room 104, and A FUTILE AND STUPID GESTURE. Other credits include The Diary of A Teenage Girl, Hollywood Adventures, the Sundance Jury & Audience Award winning film Quinceañera, We Are Marshall, Rocky Balboa, The Help, Alphadog, A Lot Like Love, The House of Sand and Fog, Blue Crush, and Crazy/Beautiful.

Commercial clients include Crate and Barrel, Kate Spade, Mercedes, Ebay, Yahoo, T-Mobile, Blue Shield, Sutter Health, and more.

Jonah Markowitz also has written and directed short and feature films, recently finishing an artist residency at the San Francisco Film Society, where he completed the screenplay for his next feature film Start At The End.

He is currently finishing post-production on the forthcoming film Political Animals. Previously, Markowitz wrote and directed the critically acclaimed film Shelter which was released theatrically by Regent Entertainment. The film was recenlty named "The Number 1 Gay Film Of All Time" by AfterElton.com on their bi-annual poll. Shelter also won the HBO Award for Outstanding First Feature, The Scion Director's Award, as well as audience awards in New York, Vancouver, Sao Paulo, Melbourne and more. Previously, Markowitz wrote and directoed two short films, I Left Me and Hung Up, which screened at over 40 festivals wordlwide and were both programmed at the American Cinematheque.

Previously, Markowitz worked in development at Columbia Pictures for producer Cathy Konrad and director Jim Mangold. Jonah graduated from the Film department at Emerson College and also studied art history in the Netherlands, as well as film theory and production at FAMU in the Czech Republic.

Spring 2021 Student Award Showcase

On February 8th, at 7:00pm, join us in celebrating the winners of the Grillo award from the Fall 2020 production courses!

Made possible with funds from the Arts and Cultural Enrichment Fee. Free admission.

The Grillo awards are designed to encourage excellence in filmmaking and help defray some of the expenses required to pursue a degree in film production. A total of up to $17,000 of Grillo funds is distributed each year to four tiers of production students. Final recipients and individual award amounts will be determined each semester by in-class student votes and a panel of judges made up of CU Cinema Studies faculty and outside professionals. A selection of award-winning films will be shown one night only.

The Grillo Awards are drawn from a University of Colorado Foundation fund set up in the early 1990s by Virgil Grillo (1938-1994), the founder and former Director of the CU Film Studies Program, whose dedication and vision helped shepherd Film Studies from its modest beginnings in the 1970s to an undergraduate program with some 600 students.

Laura Conway's film The Length of Day, which was funded in part by a Grillo Award, will have its world premier at the 2021 Slamdance film festival.

The Length of Day is a collaged essay film that tells an emotional history of socialism in the United States. Filmmaker Laura Conway enacts a cinematic seance using archival documents to communicate with her departed communist grandparents and ask them questions about the end of capitalism.
