A Bejeweled Tradition

President's chain

The gem-encrusted Presidential Chain of Office is worn by the university president during commencement ceremonies. Designed by Mary Sartor (A&S’67, MFA’71), the chain is composed of minerals and gemstones from the state of Colorado — gold, silver, diamonds, citrine, topaz and amethyst. There are two pendants — one engraved with the seals of the university and the state of Colorado, and the other a large golden topaz representing the human quest for knowledge. The Chain of Office was donated to the university in 1980 by David G. Hawthorn (MechEngr’24, MS’28) and his wife.
