Sometimes you just have to cut the line.聽

Tia Fuller

That鈥檚 what saxophonist Tia Fuller聽(MMus鈥00) was thinking outside a聽2006 audition for Beyonc茅鈥檚 all-female聽touring band.聽

Fuller was then rehearsing her own聽album also; time was precious. The odds聽were long and the audition line wrapped聽around the corner.聽

鈥淚鈥檓 not waiting eight hours,鈥澛爏he thought.聽

Talking with someone she knew,聽Fuller, then 30, politely finagled her way聽into the line without a ripple.聽

Good thing, too: She was called聽back for another performance and聽eventually got a ring from Beyonc茅鈥檚聽music director.聽

鈥淏eyonc茅 specifically asked for you,鈥澛爏he told Fuller.聽

Narrowed to 150 candidates from聽5,000, Fuller was among 10 musicians聽who made the final cut.聽

As an active member of Beyonce鈥檚 band聽from 2006-2010, she toured the world for聽eight months of the year and rehearsed聽for three months.聽

鈥淲e went to every continent聽except Antarctica!鈥澛爏aid Fuller, who grew up聽in Aurora, Colo., and began聽playing classical piano聽at age 3, adding flute and聽saxophone before she was聽a teenager.聽

While touring with聽Beyonc茅, Fuller founded聽the Tia Fuller Quartet in聽New York.聽

鈥淣othing lasts forever,聽so I wanted to remain聽visible on the jazz聽scene with my quartet,鈥澛爏he said.聽

When Beyonc茅鈥檚 band聽went on break in late聽2010, Fuller took her own聽act on the road. In time,聽she also planted a foot in聽the academy, accepting聽a full-time professorship聽teaching in Boston.聽

In one 24-hour period in聽January 2013, she received聽a teaching offer from聽Berklee College of Music聽鈥 and a call from Beyonc茅聽to rejoin the band.聽

鈥淎fter lots of prayer, I said 鈥榊es鈥 to聽Berklee and 鈥楴o鈥 to Beyonc茅,鈥 said聽Fuller, who teaches in the ensemble聽department. 鈥淎t Berklee, it鈥檚 flexible so聽I can tour, play, stay visible and direct聽eight different ensembles.鈥澛

By now, she鈥檚 got four albums of her聽own, most recently Angelic Warrior.

鈥淚 merged what I鈥檇 learned from聽Beyonc茅 about marketing and sequencing聽a show into creating my own story,鈥澛爏he said. 鈥淚 now have an idea about聽how to integrate R&B into the jazz聽world, constantly tailor-making set聽lists for different audiences.鈥澛

Her biggest challenge is balancing聽her teaching and touring schedule聽while starting a business, a booking聽agency called Elthopia Productions.聽

鈥淚 need to maintain a balance in聽everything and not feel guilty if聽I am taking time聽for leisure activities,鈥 she said.聽

That includes sitting down occasionally聽on her couch.
