Former CU-Boulder student body tri-executive Richard Murray (PolSci, Phil’04, Law’07) and his wife Elizabeth Janusz Murray (Psych’07) welcomed their son, Cayden Michael Murray, on Dec. 11. Richard made a lateral move to the law firm of Polsinelli Shugart in Denver, a large national firm with more than 600 lawyers, where he provides clients with general business counseling and assists in business, construction and commercial litigation matters. Richard also was elected as fellow of the Colorado Bar Foundation and chairman of the University Club of Denver’s committee on admissions.

International Student & Scholar Services at CU-Boulder hosted Gaza journalist Rania Elhelo (MJour’06) who shared her campus experiences and how they helped her pursue her journalism career in Gaza. She works as communications officer in American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) Gaza and covers various programs from preschooler education to health to engineering and agriculture. Rania writes commentaries, profiling people to educate the public about her community. She says studying journalism enabled her to use the power of media in humanitarian advocacy.

Since graduating, musician Ryan Bloom (Mus’07) played the drums on an album for Candlelight Records and moved to Bellingham, Wash., where he works as a drum teacher. He used both of these experiences and his CU education to write a book, Double Bass Drumming Explained: A Comprehensive Reference on the Art and Science of Double Bass. The book was self-published in May 2012 and can be found at .

´¡³Ü³Ù³ó´Ç°ùÌýAileen El-Kadi (PhDSpan’07) published her book Sam No Es Mi Tio last year. The book chronicles the Latin American experience in the U.S. It was published in 12 countries and was ranked second best-seller, nonfiction book by Amazon in 2012. Aileen lives in El Paso, Texas, where she is an assistant professor and director of Brazilian studies at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Boulder’s Frasca restaurant announced its newest staff member, sommelier Carlin Karr (Comm ex’08). Carlin worked in San Francisco where she was the opening general manager and wine director at Sons and Daughters with no prior restaurant experience. Within 18 months of opening, Sons and Daughters received a Michelin Star. In 2011 Forbes Magazine recognized Carlin in a feature representing the food and beverage industry’s best under the age of 30.

Fourth generation of Sandmeyer Steel Company Rebecca Sandmeyer (Psych’10) joined the business as district sales manager in its Rocky Mountain sales territory, which includes Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The company is a leading producer of stainless steel and nickel alloy plate products used in capital equipment for the chemical industries. She brings with her marketing and sales experience from Justin’s Nut Butter in Boulder.

Three CU alums, Brett Wagner (·¡²Ô±¹¶Ù±ð²õ’11),ÌýRyan Wagner (Aero’08), and Seamus James (Phil’10), are involved in a family business called The Bespoke Edge. The men’s clothing company operates by appointment only in northern Colorado and sells clothes nationally online through its website bespokeedge.com. Brett helped create the art direction and website for the company and lives in Boulder. His brother Ryan runs the business development side of the company and lives in Littleton, Colo. Seamus is the web developer helping build the online store and website and lives in Boulder. The Bespoke Edge was started by Brett and Ryan’s father in fall 2012.

Beer department manager Geoff Penley (Mgmt’11) and former Alumni Association student worker is employed at Cherry Hills Wine Shop, a small, specialty liquor store that focuses on mid-to-high-end wines and beers while offering some rare and collectible bottles as well. Geoff checks inventory, creates lists to order and meets with the representatives of liquor distributors to place orders. He lives in Boulder.

Since graduating Monica Gauthier (Art’12) has started her first business endeavor called Activyst, a company that creates women’s athletic bags and supports girls’ sports programs in developing countries. Monica writes when girls play sports, they are healthier, more educated and happier, which then benefits their communities. One of her business partners worked on this issue with the World Health Organization in Nicaragua. Monica lives in Longmont, Colo.
