Three years after graduating聽Jimmy Calano聽(Mktg) co-founded CareerTrack, a company that revolutionized the professional development training industry. Under Jimmy鈥檚 leadership, the company grew from a start-up to a nationally recognized corporation. After great success in the corporate sector, Jimmy sold his company and shifted his focus to the community. His involvement has aided several community projects and organizations, including United Way of Boulder, the CU Foundation, the Dairy Center of the Arts and the CU-Boulder Alumni Association. He was awarded this year鈥檚 George Norlin Award for his service and will be recognized at the Alumni Association鈥檚 annual awards ceremony in the University Memorial Center Oct. 15 during Homecoming Weekend.

Craig Clark聽(CivEngr) served as a charter member for the installation of a new chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society at Alfred State College. He serves as the dean of the school of applied technology. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation鈥檚 oldest academic society honoring all academic disciplines. Craig lives in Alfred, N.Y.

The U.S. Department of State swore in ambassador Arnold Chacon (IntlAf) as director general of the Foreign Service and director of human resources. Arnold has been a career member of the Foreign Service and over 33 years has worked as ambassador to Guatemala, deputy chief of mission in Madrid, Spain, and deputy secretary in the executive secretariat. He has also worked in Honduras, Mexico, Chile, Italy, Peru and Ecuador.

Craig Clark (CivEngr) was promoted to vice president of economic development at Alfred State College in New York. He has been associated with the college since 1979, and has served in a variety of teaching and administrative capacities, including professor and chair of the civil engineering technology department, interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of the school of applied technology on the Wellsville campus.

Earlier this year,聽Joel Berger聽(PhDBio) was named one聽of six finalists for the 2016聽Indianapolis Prize, the聽world鈥檚 leading award for聽animal conservation; Jane聽Goodall is a聽past recipient.聽A scholar at Colorado聽State University, Joel聽studies why populations聽of tundra land animals,聽such as muskoxen and聽wild yaks, are declining聽and what can be done聽about it. He helped lead聽the creation of America鈥檚聽first federally sanctioned聽wildlife migration corridor,聽the Path of the Pronghorn,聽in Yellowstone National聽Park. Joel聽has also helped聽reevaluate rhino conservation tactics in Africa and聽aided efforts to conserve聽Mongolia鈥檚 saiga antelope聽populations. He lives in聽Colorado with his wife聽and daughter.

Jack Turner (Bus) was聽elected to the Explorers Club, a renowned聽organization whose聽members include the聽adventurers who were the聽first to reach the poles,聽the summit of Mount聽Everest and the moon.聽Jack鈥檚 grandfather Ansel聽F. Hall was the first chief聽naturalist of the National聽Park Service and also a聽member of the club. Jack聽is the founding director of聽California-based Rainbow聽Bridge-Monument Valley聽Expedition Onward. The聽project is completing聽fieldwork in Arizona and聽Utah and working on 3D聽modeling聽techniques聽and virtual-reality tools to聽recreate the experience聽and surroundings of the聽expedition, including what聽was discovered and by聽whom. The result will be聽a museum exhibition at聽multiple U.S. venues.

In honor of Leonard Mermel鈥檚 (EPOBio) 60th birthday and his commitment to patient care for the citizens of Rhode Island, Governor Gina Raimondo proclaimed June 15 鈥淒r. Leonard Alan Mermel Day鈥 in the state. Leonard has spent his career advocating for patient safety by preventing infections in hospitals through national and international teaching and his extensive research. Leonard is a professor at Brown University, an adjunct professor at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals.

In November William A. Baltz (Hist) published a book, Spiritual Nexus: Discovery in America鈥檚 Heartland. It鈥檚 about聽five spiritual centers with connected histories nestled in southwest Michigan on the outskirts of Three Rivers. The co-founder of one of the retreats, Nancy Hector (A&S鈥58), is also a Forever Buff, as is Nancy鈥檚 sister, Joan Hector (A&S鈥52), an artist and teacher known for her stained slab glass installations.

In December Cardno, Inc., an infrastructure and environmental services company based in Australia, named Ted Tomasi (Econ; MA鈥79) vice president and director of national practices. He is based at the company鈥檚 Newark, Del., office. Ted, who has more than 30 years鈥 experience as a natural resource economist, also has worked as professor at the University of Michigan, University of Minnesota and Michigan State University.

Boulder County district attorney Stan Garnett (Hist; Law鈥82) has decided not to make a second run for Colorado Attorney General. He ran unsuccessfully in 2010. Stan is now in his third term as Boulder鈥檚 DA. In March, he and his wife, Brenda, celebrated their 39th anniversary. The couple lives in Boulder.

Previously Pam worked as a journalist聽with Fairchild Publications and at radio station KBOL in Boulder. She and husband Rob live in Los Angeles, Calif., with their two daughters, Caroline and Jennifer.

After more than 32 years, Robert Garcia (Art) retired in May from his聽position as graphics editor at the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, the largest newspaper between Denver and Salt Lake City. Robert has received more than three dozen awards for newspaper design and graphics from the Colorado Press Association and the Colorado Associated Press Editors and Reporters organization. He writes that his mid- 1970s experience in Boulder with the campus minority student newspaper El Diario de la Gente was the foundation for his success. In 1995, Robert, a fifth-generation Coloradan, was designated a CU Hispanic Alumni Association Distinguished Alum.

In April, Katherine Leonard (Chem, MCDBio) presented results of her research study 鈥淭he Meaning of Touch to Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy鈥 at the United Health Services 25th Annual Oncology Teaching Day in Owego, N.Y. The research was previously published in the Oncology Nursing Forum in September 2015. Katherine is a nurse practitioner with SUNY Upstate鈥檚 adult oncology medicine group鈥檚 outpatient聽clinics. She retired from Upstate Hospital in 2012.

For more than 40 years, Bill Lerner (Comm) has helped grow and develop iPark, his family鈥檚 parking garage business (previously known as Imperial Parking Systems), into New York鈥檚 largest garage and parking facilities operator. Bill also started the organization Billy4Kids to provide shoes for underprivileged children around the world.

Susan Cooke聽Barfield聽(MEdu), professor emerita at Montana State University Billings, has dedicated her life to advocating for and educating the public about international minorities. A previous Fulbright聽Scholar in Chile and Slovakia, Susan is working with three Mapuche elders in rural Patagonia, Chile, to create a trilingual (English, Spanish, Mapundungun) book based on a Mapuche folktale. The book, which will be illustrated by Mapuche students, is supported by a National Geographic Society Explorer Grant. In fall 2018, Susan will travel to the University of Vilnius in Lithuania to work as a Fulbright Specialist.

Stan Garnett聽(Hist; Law鈥82) was named co-chair of聽Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck鈥檚 government investigations and white聽collar defense group, based in Denver. Stan served as district attorney for Colorado鈥檚 20th Judicial District (Boulder County) for nearly 10 years, serving three terms. He also served as president of the Colorado District Attorneys Council in 2017 and on the board of directors of the National District Attorneys Association.聽

Bill Green (MechEngr鈥78), president of the Denver-based mechanical engineering company RMH Group, was named one of 20 industry leaders chosen as a 2018 inaugural class of Design-Build Institute of America Fellows. The fellowship is the highest level of DBIA certification and acknowledges the achievements of the nation鈥檚 most accomplished design-build professionals. Bill was inducted during a ceremony held on Nov. 8 in New Orleans.

Composer聽and multi-media artist聽Pamela Z聽(MusEdu) was awarded聽the Frederic A. Juilliard/Walter Damrosch Rome聽Prize for musical composition last April. The prize聽includes an 11-month聽fellowship in the Italian聽capital. Pamela is聽considered a pioneer聽of digital looping, and聽won a Guggenheim聽Fellowship in 2004.

Jeff Mehan (Econ) of Stamford, Connecticut, has been resurrecting dual-slalom professional ski racing, taking it back to the days of Billy Kidd (Econ鈥69) and Spider Sabich (A&S鈥71). Some of his more recent competitions included races in Vail, Steamboat and Eldora, Colorado. Jeff works on Wall Street in the international financial derivatives markets.
