In September, Rudy von Berg Jr. (Mktg) and his father, Rodolphe von Berg, competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn. It was the first time that a pro (Rudy) and his father competed in the same 70.3 championship. Rudy placed 13th overall; Rodophe placed 2nd in the 60-64 age category.

Aspiring science writer Amanda Grennell (PhDChem) was awarded an AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship. She will be writing in a newsroom for 10 weeks for PBS NewsHour. At CU, Amanda used ultrafast lasers to study biomimetic nanoparticle-enzyme systems that can turn sunlight into fuel. She was also聽the senior editor for the graduate student-run blog Science Buffs.

After graduation,聽Bryce Arai Mawhinney聽(Acct, Econ, Mktg) embarked on a one-month expedition聽to Nepal to work with the Katie Adamson Conservation Fund, a nonprofit that promotes endangered animal conservation initiatives. While in Nepal, Bryce transported camera equipment, supported sustainable honeybee projects and helped care for a rhino calf. Bryce currently works for Deloitte Consulting in Denver and writes that he hopes to merge his business and environmental interests in the future.

September was聽a big month for Rudy Von Berg聽(Mktg), who won the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Elsinore, Denmark. One week later, he placed second at the Ironman 70.3 in Mont Tremblant, Canada. At CU, he won USA Triathlon Collegiate National titles in 2014 and 2015.

Chelsea Heveran (PhDMechEngr) and Juan Pablo Gevaudan (PhDArchEngr鈥19) were selected as one of seven winners of the National Science Foundation鈥檚 Idea Machine competition. Their idea centers on durable, recyclable structures that could be used on Mars. The competition solicited 800 entries. Chelsea is an associate professor at Montana State, and Juan Pablo recently accepted a position at Penn State鈥檚 architectural engineering department.

Joey Azofeifa (PhDCompSci) was named to this year鈥檚 Forbes鈥 30 Under 30 list. He is founder and CEO of Arpeggio Bio. Housed at CU鈥檚 BioFrontiers Institute, Arpeggio develops important RNA drug-screening processes, providing critical data and improving drug success.

While studying at Colorado Law, Ariel Diamond (Law) served as editor-in-chief of the Colorado Technology Law Journal and an active member of the Silicon Flatirons student group. Now, as an associate attorney at the global law firm DLA Piper, she advises telecommunications industry members on compliance issues. Brothers Sean Chenoweth (EnvSt鈥17) and Wylie Chenoweth (ChemBioEngr, MCDBio鈥12) founded Aircada, an industrial augmented reality HMI (human machine interface) and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) company, which helps maintenance and manufacturing teams simplify their operations. Wylie taught industrial automation after graduating from CU, and saw a need for industrial technicians to have better access to their facility鈥檚 data. Aircada offers augmented reality displays of plant data so workers can point their camera at their equipment and see 3D meters, machine schematics, maintenance records and other documentation. Since graduating from CU, Frederick 鈥淔lick鈥 Mooradian (StComm鈥17) has launched a sparkling tequila company, Tequio. A tequila cocktail in a can, Tequio is made with 100% additive-free blue agave tequila, sparkling water and a hint of lime. The word 鈥渢equio,鈥 which means 鈥渃ommunity service鈥 in the Aztec language, was the inspiration for his brand. Tequio supports local Mexican communities that make its business possible. Tequio has won a gold medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and raised close to $1 million in funding. Tequio is created in Arandas, Jalisco in partnership with the family who started Cazadores Tequila.

Muhammad Khan (MBA鈥17) is a community gardener and environmental activist who has won several awards for his tireless work in the environmental domain. His day job is in digital advertising at Adcellerant, a digital marketing company, where he also is the head of the company鈥檚 charitable arm, Adcellerant Gives, and the sole proprietor of Adcellerant鈥檚 zero waste initiative. He helped earn the company Denver鈥檚 Certifiably Green Business designation and a zero-waste designation in less than two years. Muhammad served as an activist with Boulder-based Eco-Cycle, an advocacy group for zero-waste policy and business practices.

Matt Isola聽(Advert鈥17;聽MStComm鈥18) started the聽nonprofit Generation Exchange while he was still聽a CU student. Generation聽Exchange is a program聽that links together young聽adults and elders to swap聽knowledge, advice and聽stories. Matt came up聽with the idea after being聽assigned a project at CU聽to fix a social issue. He聽helped his grandfather鈥檚聽friend set up a new iPad聽and gained a close friend聽out of the experience. 鈥淚聽unlocked a mentor that聽day,鈥 Matt said in an聽article written by聽Sarah聽McKinney Gibson聽(Mktg鈥98) for PBS鈥檚聽Next聽Avenue. 鈥淚 thought I聽was going over there to聽help him, but he helped聽me 10 times more with聽life.鈥 More than 2,000聽people have participated聽in Generation Exchange聽workshop.听
