On April 23, CU football’s spring showcase took place in Folsom Field, giving fans a first look at the upcoming fall season.

"I'm encouraged with where our defense is," Buffs head coach Karl Dorrell said. "We have good depth and good experience, some young talent that's really going to help us play at a high level and sustain a high level throughout games."

Ralphie VI also was present at the event, and delighted spectators with her first run of 2022.

Coloradan for the Family

Olympic Infographic Correction

On pages 33-34 [“An Olympic CU Legacy,” Summer 2021], your photo spread shows “Billy Kidd (Econ’69) and Jimmie Heuga (PolSci’73)” in the center photo. Actually, the picture is of Billy Kidd and coach Bob Beatty. That said, the Innsbruck Olympic team with Kidd, Heuga and Jim “Moose” Barrows (Mgmt’70) was awesome.

More on Aerosols and COVID-19

I found the comments by David Dennison (MechEngr’73) in his letter concerning clarinets and aerosol distribution very interesting. I find myself comparing the response to COVID-19 and the response to the Asian flu in 1957. That year, I was a music education major enrolled in the required clarinet class.

The university’s response to the Asian flu? I never noticed a response! Students rented instruments for the wind classes from the university; two students rented the same instrument. I never met the student who shared my instrument, but I believe I caught the flu from that student. We did have our own reeds, but we used the same mouthpiece. I was terribly ill for two weeks. Finally, when I was well enough to drag myself from class to class, I appeared at the studio door of the visiting piano professor who had taken the place of my regular professor who was working on his doctorate at Eastman. “Well, you should have had plenty of time to practice,” she said.

Does the university still rent the same instrument to more than one student? Surely it does not!

Coloradan or Coloradoan?

I have a pet peeve that we should be called Coloradoans not Coloradans. So I found an article online you had in 2019 [“Origins: Coloradan or Coloradoan,” Spring 2019] that I tend to disagree with. I know it isn’t a big deal, but every time I hear what I feel to be incorrect, it drives me crazy! So I would appreciate it if you could help me spread the word that we should use Coloradoan more often.

The Legacy of Carroll Hardy

Life is beautiful when you take time to look. This applies to the football field as well.

The late Carroll Hardy (A&S’55) was one of Dal Ward’s best ever and should have been remembered in your Coloradan with a full page. During 1950 to 1954 Hardy and Frank Bernardi (Mktg’56) were nationally known on the CU football team, and both men continued as very special people in later life.

I met my wife Barb Palmer (Bio’54) at the 1950 freshman mixer ... this has been an amazing journey. CU is a big part of our life.

1956 Class Note

I am responding to an entry in Class Notes, page 55, Summer 2021 edition. Edward F. Altman (Fin’56) is searching for a classmate that he would like to contact. I am not a classmate (I graduated in 1957 in aerospace). But I had a fraternity brother in the Phi Kappa Tau Greek fraternity who was my pledge “father” named Ed Altman, who was from my hometown of Pueblo, Colo. He and I were not close friends, and after graduation we both went our separate ways, never crossing paths after leaving Boulder.

In June 1957 when I graduated, I immediately moved to the Dallas area to take a job as an engineer with Chance Vought Aircraft, and nine months later entered the Air Force, attended pilot training and followed a world-wide career path as a pilot until March 1984, when I retired in Annapolis, Maryland, to do a second career as a professional engineer and project manager with a defense contractor. I retired for good in June 2017 and am living in Annapolis with my wife and golden retriever.

The Stones in Concert

I was at the 1981 Rolling Stones concert in Boulder. We were up front and Mick Jagger put a scarf around my neck at that concert. I was wondering if there is a picture of that? That day was one of the best days of my life. We rode our Harley to that concert. I don’t know the biker that lifted me up so Mick could put the scarf around my neck, but it was a great moment in my life. I am getting older, and my grandchildren know the story and I would like to have a picture to share with my grandchildren.

How about a commemorative plaque in 2028 placed at Folsom Field honoring the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones playing there on July 16, 1978? It would further endear Folsom Field to a great moment in history and would be recognition of an event not necessarily affiliated with CU Athletics.

Artwork created by CU alum Rachel Maly (Mktg’18), depicting a lively football game at CU’s Folsom Field.

Although the CU football team was able to play six games in 2020 despite pandemic restrictions, it wasn’t the same without students, alumni, faculty and supporters cheering them on from the stands. The digital illustration shown above, created by Rachel Maly (Mktg’18), reminds us of those lively, pre-pandemic nights when Folsom Field’s seats were packed with Buffs fans.

Rachel now works as a social media campaign coordinator for DaVita doing graphic design and digital art on the side. She writes that her favorite memory from CU “would have to be the 2016 football season as a whole!” She shares that she was able to go to every home game and also ventured out of state to cheer on the Buffs at the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio and at the CU vs. Michigan game in Ann Arbor.

Rick George, the sixth full-time athletic director in Buffs history, is now in his eighth year at ��ƷSM��ӰƬ. Here he talks about transforming CU’s facilities, leading in a pandemic and taking Sundays to cut the grass.

In 2013, you were the president of baseball operations for MLB’s Texas Rangers. Then the athletic director (AD) role at CU opened. What about it appealed to you?

Having been here before, my wife and I had a love for this place. Our youngest daughter was born here. I always wanted to be an AD. The only two places I would be interested in were Illinois — because I played there — and Colorado. When the opportunity presented, we jumped.

The Athletic Complex expansion transformed campus’ sports facilities. What were the challenges of the $156 million project?

When I got here, our facilities were way behind. We had to raise a certain portion of the money before we could break ground. Our donors really stepped up and got behind this project. We broke ground on May 2, 2014. We wanted it done by football season. The day before our first home game, we were still finishing things. I was a little nervous.

It started as one project and ended as another. We hadn’t contemplated the Sports Medicine Center, then our doctors approached us. We weren’t going to build a track in the indoor facility, but [track coach] Mark Wetmore came to me. We built a rooftop terrace, which has been home to many weddings.

What are the most important elements of a successful collegiate athletics program?

Leadership and communication.

Do you have the chance to connect with each student-athlete?

Before the pandemic, I would go down to our Crawford Club, where our student-athletes eat every day. I say hello to whoever is down there, just to see how they're doing, and I host a once-a-month session that we call Rockin’ with Rick (it wasn’t my name choice). I usually feed them stuff our nutritionist doesn’t like. We can talk about anything. It’s an opportunity for them to have access to me. Boulder Buffs, our peer advocate program in Psychological Health & Performance, came out of these gatherings.

Have the last few months with COVID been the most challenging period in your time at CU?

It has been by far the most challenging experience I’ve had in my almost 40-year career.

What have been the guiding influences as you navigate this time?

I want to continue to provide proper support for our student-athletes. That’s been a real focus of mine. Health and wellness are first and foremost as we make decisions.

What ultimately were the factors for the Pac-12 deciding to postpone most sports until 2021?

The Pac-12 Medical Advisory Board listed three major concerns they had about starting competitions. Community prevalence of the virus in much of the Pac-12 footprint, a need for more information on long-term effects of the virus and a need for increased testing resources were the main reasons why postponing all competitions to the spring was the best path to protect the health and safety of our student-athletes.

With most sports competitions postponed through the end of 2020, how will fall student-athletes continue their practice and workouts?

Our facilities will continue to remain open for workouts throughout this fall. We will provide for our student-athletes in all areas just as years past. We will follow Pac-12 and NCAA guidelines when it comes to allowable practice hours, and we feel confident those can start very shortly.

You’ve worked in football, the PGA and MLB. If all three are playing on a Sunday afternoon, what is your TV on?

I’m out cutting the grass and doing yard work. It’s my therapy. I don’t watch a lot of TV during football season because I’m usually at a game and the same during basketball season.

How often have you ordered takeout from local restaurants since the pandemic began?

Two or three times a week. We’ve got great friends and partners that own restaurants. A lot are suffering. People are losing their jobs, and we don’t take that lightly.

Do you have a personal fitness routine?

I ride my road bike. I had my knee replaced, so I’ve been rehabbing with an exercise bike in my office. That’s my routine.

Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Ceal Barry retired July 1 after 43 years in college athletics. At CU, she coached women’s basketball for 22 years before serving in administration the last 15 years. ... Richard Rokos, head ski coach for the past 30 seasons, announced 2021 will be his last year. Since his hiring, the Buffs have qualified for every NCAA championship and won eight of them. ... Track stars Dani Jones (Psych, SLHSci’20), Joe Klecker (BioChem’20) and Makena Morley (Anth, Engl’20) announced they are forgoing remaining seasons of eligibility to pursue pro careers. ... With the departure of John Graves (Mgmt’09), Taylor Stratton (EBio, EnvSt, Geog’13) was named manager of the Ralphie Live Mascot Program. She served as assistant coach for the last four years. ... Betty Hoover of the "CU Twins" dies at 95

The Buffs lost legendary fan Betty Fitzgerald Hoover (A&S’46), twin sister to Peggy Fitzgerald Coppom (A&S’46), to pancreatic cancer Aug. 5, 2020. As CU athletic director Rick George said, “If you know CU Athletics you know Betty and Peggy.” Hoover held season tickets for football since 1958 and basketball since 1979 when the CU Events Center opened. The “CU Twins” grew up on Colorado’s eastern plains before moving to Longmont in 1939 and then to Boulder a year later. Attendance at Boulder High and CU followed, as did husbands and seven children between their two families. For the last 30 years, Betty and Peggy were inseparable. They garnered national attention and local affection for their matching outfits, pompoms and enthusiasm. Women’s basketball head coach JR Payne said, “Betty and Peggy have blessed so many with their unwavering spirit and love for everyone.” Hoover connected with numerous student-athletes as well: Men’s basketball’s Evan Battey (Jour’22) wrote of Hoover, “Thank you for giving me a shoulder to lean on.”

Back-to-back shows at Folsom Field marked the end of Dead & Company's summer tour. The first show on Friday, July 5 was delayed shortly after it began as rain and hail pelted the stadium, but the band made up for lost time by foregoing their usual break. The next night, their final show of the summer went off without a hitch.

The Grateful Dead first played at Folsom Field in 1972, and in 2016 were the first act to play in the stadium since 2001. Check out more photos from their shows at @CUBu ffs.

From its earliest days, ��ƷSM��ӰƬ educated men and women both. But it wasn’t until 1934 that the first largescale women’s dormitory opened. You’d know it as Sewall Hall.

It turns out there were plans for an earlier sizable women’s residence, never built. Last October, contractors discovered them among other items in a crawl space beneath the Folsom Field bleachers.

Dated July 31, 1919, and prepared by the firm of architect Charles Klauder — who designed Hellems and other prominent ��ƷSM��ӰƬ buildings — the drawings depict a four-floor, boomerang-shaped structure along Broadway, just west of Hale.

Here you see excerpts from the blueprints, scanned and reversed to improve image quality. They’re now in safekeeping at the CU Heritage Center.
