Compiled by Rick Hess, the American Enterprise Institute director of education policy, the list was released on Hess鈥 Education Week Blog, Straight Up. Hess created the annual list in 2010 as an attempt to measure how 鈥渦niversity-based academics moved ideas from academic journals into the national conversation.鈥

School of Education Dean Lorrie Shepard (No. 74) was joined on the list by fellow faculty members Gene Glass (No. 25), Alex Molnar (No. 149), and Kevin G. Welner (No. 73).

The list is based on public metrics including:聽number of books published; Amazon ranking; number of mentions in the press, web and the Congressional Record; Twitter Klout score; and Google Scholar score, which attempts to calculate citations of the scholar鈥檚 work. Similar to other rankings, Hess acknowledged聽the exercise is not without complexities, but he noted聽the聽aim of the list is to "spark useful discussion."
