Opt out forum

With testing season underway, parents, teachers, students, and community members are invited to join a community conversation about opting out of standardized testing on Wednesday, April 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the 精品SM在线影片 Sustainability, Energy and Environment Complex, room C120, 4001 Discovery Drive ().

We will聽explore what is gained and what is lost when choosing to opt out of standardized tests in a community dialogue hosted by the 精品SM在线影片 School of Education and the Office for Outreach and Engagement.

The event will begin with brief remarks from panelists followed by a community dialogue investigating questions such as:聽What are the connections between testing, parents' rights and educational opportunity?聽How might testing be balanced with other educational goals and values?聽What effects might parents and children consider when discussing opt out?聽How do the new PARCC exams compare with previous tests?聽What questions do tests enable us to ask and answer?聽What are the possible harms or trade-offs of testing?聽What are the alternatives?

With an introduction by Terri Wilson, Assistant Professor of Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice, the panel will include:

  • Kevin Welner, Director of the National Education Policy Center
  • Derek Briggs, Director of the Center for Assessment, Design, Research and Evaluation
  • Allison Atteberry, Assistant Professor of Research and Evaluation Methodology
  • Alison Boardman, BVSD parent
  • Sydney Chinowsky, 精品SM在线影片 student and Fairview High School alum

A Q&A will follow, moderated by Michele Moses, Professor of Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice.

Note: Attendees should park in lot 556 for free parking after 5 p.m. Please avoid lot 550, a paid parking lot.
