As faculty, staff, and students in the School of Education, we stand in solidarity with the members of the Black Student Alliance who see this as a critical moment to make structural changes to address racism on this campus.
We echo their calls for accountability, training, and education that can help us become an antiracist institution. We recognize that racism is a real, persistent problem on our campus, and not a rare event. We insist that campus leaders and our community provide greater care for our students, including more attention to their wellbeing, their dignity, and their desire to learn. To begin to do this, we must work together to learn to see racism, understand its effects, and intervene immediately and without hesitation or compromise. Working with members of these marginalized groups through avenues of their student-led coalitions is an important way to achieve this goal.
