Steve Lamos is Associate Professor in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric and the English Department. His work focuses on issues of race and racism within U.S. college-level writing instruction, particularly in the context of 鈥渂asic writing鈥 programs; on issues of teaching-track labor in contemporary U.S. writing programs; and on novel forms of literate becoming at the intersection of the sonic and the alphabetic.
Lamos鈥 published work includes the book听Interests and Opportunities: Race, Racism, and University Writing Instruction in the Post-Civil Rights Era听(Pitt UP, 2011), winner of a 2013 鈥淪pecial Commendation鈥 from the Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award committee; the essay 鈥淭oward Job Security for Teaching-Track Composition Faculty: Recognizing and Rewarding Affective-Labor-in-Space,鈥 which won the 2016 Richard C. Ohmann prize for outstanding essay in听College English; and a range of pieces in听College Composition and Communication,听College English,听Journal of Basic Writing,听Writing Program Administration,听Composition Studies, and several edited collections.听
Lamos鈥 current book project is tentatively titled听Resonant Rhythms: Drumming, Writing, and Professing a Literate Life.听 It explores intersections between his academic work and his work as听the drummer and trumpet player for the indie / emo band American Football.听听American Football is routinely included among the most influential emo artists of all time by听Rolling Stone,听Spin,听NME,听Kerrang!,听Vulture, Stereogum, The Guardian,听Alternative Press,听Pitchfork,听NPR, Brooklyn Vegan, and many others.
