Vilja Hulden

I am a historian of the United States and a teaching associate professor at the Department of at the ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ.

My work focuses on labor and social history around the turn of the twentieth century. My first book, was published by the University of Illinois Press in 2023 and can be thanks to a (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem) grant.

Besides the traditional sorts of historical research, I also work with techniques that broadly fall under the "digital history" or "digital humanities" umbrella – more on that on the Research page.

I teach a variety of classes, from the American history overview class to the department's methods seminar and upper-level classes on immigration history and the Vietnam War. I've also just developed a new class called "Made in America: The History of Work and Workers in the United States" which I hope to be teaching soon-ish. For more, see the Teaching page, as well as the Student Showcase!

I've also been organizing events around digital humanities: in 2015 I started – now less active, as much of the that type of work has been taken over by our fantastic Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship. In 2018 and again in 2019, together with colleagues from the University of Denver and elsewhere we organized a symposium – hopefully more to come along those lines.

If you want the long and boring version, feel free to download my CV.
