Floor Plan & Construction Document Requests Information

Please read and make sure you understand the following before proceeding with a floorplan & construction document request.

Students

In the CAD office we consider helping students and making our archives available to you one of our core functions and we very much enjoy being a part of the academic experience at ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ. Our efforts are important in the construction and planning of campus projects but our documents also play an integral role in student and faculty health and safety.

For Students Curious About Life on Campus

As a part of our campus safety plan we do not under any circumstance distribute any housing related documents to students. We understand how exciting it can be to plan life in a new dorm room but you will have to either visit our housing facilities during a campus visit or wait until move-in weekend to see your room in person. There are some handy resources available with our partners in Housing and Dining Services that can help make planning a move less stressful and they can answer any of your questions regarding room configuration, room types and location.

For Students Working on a Class Project or Research

We often collaborate with students on class projects and in some cases partner with them as they research systems across campus. In our office we update and maintain AutoCAD floor plans for all university owned properties and use GIS to map campus. We have as-built or record sets for nearly all buildings on campus but those are either CAD drawings from consultants or scanned copies of drawings that were hand drafted decades ago. We do not maintain any elevations, sections, structural or mechanical drawings but we are eager to share those portions of consultant prepared drawing sets. If you are interested in accessing our curated list of study buildings or maps, please first talk to your professor or instructor and have them file a request form with our office. If request forms are submitted without class information (class name, course number, professor/instructor name and email address and a brief description of the assignment) they will go unfulfilled.

Professors and Instructors

In the CAD office, we consider helping students and making our archives available to them one of our core functions and we very much enjoy being a part of the academic experience at ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ. As our work shifted to a remote setting during the pandemic we came to truly realize the value of sharing files digitally with students. While leaning on our digital capabilities we also learned that it is difficult to turn around multiple fairly complex requests quickly when they all come in together and everyone is eager to get something back. There are also complexities to student work that we previously were unaware of and as result we have redrawn our document sharing guidelines to better serve student needs and help keep our little team on track with university building projects.

How can My Students get Documents?

We ask that you file a document request on behalf of your students at the beginning of the semester should your syllabus call for drawings or maps from our office. If requests are submitted mid-semester they will be fulfilled in the order that they are received. We ask that you file a bulk request so that our office is not inundated with redundant requests and so that we are all able to avoid workload related bottlenecks. An advantage to requesting documents at the beginning of the semester is that you can have all the files preloaded into Canvas for student download and alleviate the burden of email distribution on your end.

Background on Our Drawings and Maps

In our office we update and maintain AutoCAD floor plans for all university owned properties and use GIS to map campus. We do not maintain any elevations, sections, structural or mechanical drawings but we are eager to share those portions of consultant prepared drawing sets.

What Buildings and Maps are My Students Able to Request?

We ask that students select a building from our roster of pre-approved buildings. There are many factors that influenced our building choices but our chief concerns were student and faculty health and safety as well as protecting sensitive research and utility sites. As a part of our campus safety plan we do not under any circumstance distribute any housing related documents to students. Our approved buildings come from many construction eras on campus and are mixed in terms of use and program. We also considered document quality as not all campus structures are equal when it comes to what we have on record in our archives. We used similar criteria to steer our decisions on what mapping resources are available for student use.

What if None of the Buildings on the Pre-Approved List Satisfy the Needs of My Assignment?

Before ruling our roster out, we ask that you reach out to us at fmcad@colorado.edu and outline for us what the nature of your assignment is and together we can determine what building would be a good fit for your class. We ask that you submit a detailed description of the work assigned so that we better understand the needs of the exercise. We can give access to an alternate structure on a case-by-case basis but we will have to assess campus safety and research impacts and those criteria may eliminate it from eligibility. Should an alternate pass our tests, document turnaround times will be longer as we only have our pre-approved documents ready for immediate distribution.

Staff

Staff requests will be fulfilled so long as there is a valid business case for the request.
