Teaching Excellence Spotlight - Elizabeth Embry

Elizabeth Embry is a 5th year PhD student studying Entrepreneurship. With a background in public health and sustainability, Beth鈥檚 research interests focus on the entrepreneurial opportunities to address the pressing social issues of our time. Her dissertation specifically examines the intersection of sustainability, health, and business in the built environment. Beth was recently awarded a Teaching Excellence Award based on her teaching philosophy and dedication to her students. We asked Beth a few questions to learn more about her as a teacher and get to know her better. Read more below!

What is your favorite part about teaching?

Helping students apply their personal passions to help address problems in our community.

Please tell us a bit about your pedagogical philosophy.

I focus on experiential learning through applied projects that build on each other and require partnering with and learning from the larger Boulder community.

What is a favorite teaching resource you would like to share with other graduate teachers?

I love working with the Idea Forge to help students utilize design thinking to solve problems and physically create solutions.

What are your recommendations for continuing or increasing student advocacy and engagement?

Utilizing a pre-class survey to get to know students- their personal interests and goals, then utilizing these responses to build in-class cases and examples.

Tell us a fun fact about you that is not related to your teaching and research.

I am a triathlete who loves completing half ironman races and a mother of two sweet girls!

What is a good book you have read recently and why did you enjoy it?

Codebreaker by Walter Isaacson - tells the story of a dynamic female researcher and scholar who's decades of work led to helping understand and combat the pandemic.
