Today,聽the EU seems to be in an existential crisis. Against this backdrop, the early聽history of European integration since the 1950s shines all the brighter. But is聽this an appropriate assessment?聽Kiran Patel analyzes the concrete effects and results of聽European integration and what we can learn from the past for our present day,聽summarizing some of the key findings of his monograph on聽the topic (presently available聽in German; an English version is forthcoming).

Kiran聽Klaus Patel is professor and chair of European and global history at Maastricht聽University where he also serves as head of department. His latest publications聽include:聽Projekt Europa. Eine聽kritische Geschichte聽(Munich: Beck, 2018);聽The聽New Deal: A Global History聽(Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2016);聽European聽Integration and the Atlantic Community in the 1980s聽(New聽York: Cambridge聽University Press, 2013; ed. with Kenneth Weisbrode); and聽The Historical聽Foundations of EU Competition Law聽(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2013; ed.聽with Heike聽Schweitzer).

This lecture is part of the Gerda Henkel Lecture Series, organized聽by GHI West, the Pacific Regional Office of the Germany Historical Institute,聽Washington DC, in cooperation with the Gerda聽Henkel Foundation. The program聽brings German historians to the West Coast to present their research and engage聽in dialogue with their North American colleagues.
