To our international students and scholars from every corner of the globe:聽

EXECUTIVE ORDER聽

As you are probably aware, this past Friday evening, President Trump signed an executive order about immigration. You can read the executive order online on the White House鈥檚 office website.听

On Friday evening, ISSS sent an email message to student and scholars from the countries impacted by the executive order informing them of the order and advising them not to depart the U.S.听

For 90 days, the order stops the entry into the U.S. of individuals who are citizens/passport holders, nationals (based upon place of birth), and dual citizens/nationals of the following countries: Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Libya. The U.S. government will be requesting information from these countries and will determine in the next few months whether individuals from these countries will be able to enter the U.S. after the 90-day ban. Individuals born in or having a passport from one of these countries, should NOT travel outside of the U.S., even if they have a valid U.S. visa, as they will NOT be able to return to the U.S. for at least 90 days and possibly indefinitely. Individuals who are dual citizens of the U.S. and one of these countries or have U.S. lawful permanent residency (鈥渁 green card鈥) and were born in and/or hold citizenship from one of these countries, should consult with an immigration attorney before travelling outside of the U.S. We have a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document about the most recent executive order posted on our website.听

The executive order does not affect your current immigration status in the U.S. if you are currently in the U.S. and do not depart the U.S.听

Even if you are not from one of the countries listed above, you should understand another section of the executive order that could affect your future travel plans outside of the U.S. The order requires that all applicants for a non-immigrant visa (including F-1 student visas) attend an interview at a U.S. consulate or embassy abroad. Previously a U.S. consulate could waive the interview requirement in certain situations. What this means for you is that most likely it will take longer to get a visa abroad. If you plan to depart the U.S. and need to apply for a new visa stamp before returning, you should check how long it will take to get a visa interview before making plans and schedule the interview as far in advance as possible. You can check wait times for visa interview on the .听

There are currently lawsuits pending in courts around the country in response to the executive order. However, at this time, the above sections of the order are still in effect. If there are any changes, ISSS will advise you.听
