Molecular contents are exchanged between organelles by the formation of membrane-enclosed vesicles that bud from one organelle and fuse with another. In principle, this process seems a simple one, yet it features many layers of regulation, with both protein and lipid components involved.

Our research studies mechanisms of organelle biogenesis and function that are generally conserved throughout Eukarya.聽 We use the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system because of its ease of genetic manipulation, its avenues of biochemical study, and its inherently ideal composition for high-resolution imaging of organelle substructure by electron tomography.聽 Defects in the mechanisms we study are linked to human diseases.
