I am interested in learning about the role that signal evolution plays in species coexistence. I use field experiments and comparative analyses to learn about how signal divergence allows closely related species to co-occur, thus promoting diversification. Most recently, my work has focused primarily on characterizing the visual signals that birds use in between-species interactions and the selective pressures that influence them. One of my current projects examines how color pattern differences affect interactions between black-capped and mountain chickadees in the local contact zone between them.
