Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering</span></a><span>. The company has seen great success, including the development of a medical device designed to enable more efficient procedures in the small bowel region.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Today, with the help of a $4.5 million award through the Anschutz Acceleration Initiative (AAI), Rentschler and his colleagues are working to bring two new products to the market that will transform these types of procedures even further.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“We brought our first product out on the market in 2024,” said Rentschler, also a faculty member in&nbsp;</span><a href="/bme/" rel="nofollow"><span>biomedical engineering (BME)</span></a><span> and&nbsp;</span><a href="/program/robotics/" rel="nofollow"><span>robotics</span></a><span>. “We are planning to bring a second and third product to the market in 12-18 months, and we are extremely excited to get these devices in the hands of interventional endoscopists.”</span></p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-right ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-lightgray"><div class="ucb-box-inner"><div class="ucb-box-title">&nbsp;</div><div class="ucb-box-content"> <div class="align-center image_style-medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/mechanical/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/2025-02/2025_2_3_Mark_Rentschler_Endoscopy_Devices_PC0025.JPG?itok=xXZSKIr6" width="750" height="500" alt="Mark Rentschler holding an Aspero Medical medical device"> </div> </div> <p>Professor Mark Rentschler holding Aspero Medical's patented Ancora-SB balloon overtube.</p></div></div></div><p dir="ltr"><span>In 2023, Aspero received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)&nbsp;</span><a href="/bme/2023/09/11/rentschlers-startup-company-improves-endoscopy-procedures-patented-balloon-technology" rel="nofollow"><span>to market and sell the Ancora-SB device</span></a><span>. The product is used during endoscopy procedures to diagnose and treat small bowel diseases.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>According to Rentschler, operating within the small intestine can be time consuming and technically challenging. Equipped with a patented micro-textured balloon, the Ancora-SB overtube is designed to provide more traction and anchoring consistency than smooth latex or smooth silicone balloon overtube competitors.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“Balloon overtubes for small bowel procedures have been around for about a decade,” said Rentschler. “We’re not looking to change the small bowel enteroscopy procedure, but instead improve balloon anchoring performance during these procedures in the small bowel.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Ancora-SB has allowed Aspero to prove their worth in hospitals. Their next products expand on this concept, of course, with additional features that can facilitate a less invasive interventional procedure than traditional open surgery.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The next generation balloon overtube will be used to remove cancerous lesions in the large bowel region. It features an extra working channel that allows for an additional tool to be utilized alongside the visualization scope. This offers physicians more control, access, and stabilization when maneuvering through the colon and performing advanced interventional procedures.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“Conceptually, these devices will enable triangulated surgery with two tools and centralized visualization so that physicians can more efficiently perform surgery from inside the lumen,” Rentschler said. “Instead of historically invasive procedures, where the patient is cut open, and the cancerous bowel region is removed, we’re assisting physicians as they remove the cancer from the inside of the lumen during an outpatient procedure.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“It's much less invasive, with potentially tremendous cost savings, and numerous benefits for the patient.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Aspero’s third product will be another balloon overtube, this time with a working channel that enables minimally invasive cancer removal in the esophagus and stomach regions of the gastrointestinal tract.&nbsp;</span></p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-left ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-lightgray"><div class="ucb-box-inner"><div class="ucb-box-title">&nbsp;</div><div class="ucb-box-content"> <div class="align-center image_style-medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/mechanical/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/2025-02/2025_2_3_Mark_Rentschler_Endoscopy_Devices_PC0044.JPG?itok=3VghBVhb" width="750" height="501" alt="Mark Rentschler holding current, past Aspero Medical devices"> </div> </div> <p>Rentschler showcasing all three of the medical devices in Aspero Medical's multi-product platform, including their two new highly anticipated devices.</p></div></div></div><p dir="ltr"><span>Rentschler and his team say the two upcoming devices have the potential to replace a large, and growing, number of today’s conventional surgical procedures in the gastrointestinal region by enhancing safety and efficiency while reducing patient recovery time. Moving procedures from inpatient surgery to outpatient endoscopy can generate potential cost savings of up to 50 percent or more.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“Everyone knows this is the direction we need to go. Clinical outcomes from these types of procedures are incredibly strong, but the techniques and devices aren’t widely available yet,” said Rentschler. “We are creating products that help physicians and patients feel safe and comfortable without overcomplicating things. The paradigm is rapidly shifting, and we endeavor to push endoscopy forward.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>The company is currently finalizing the design of the second product. It’s about six months further along in development than the third product, but Rentschler says they are looking to have both devices FDA cleared by the end of 2026.&nbsp;</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>When all three devices hit the market, Aspero will look to market a portfolio of products, rather than a single tool. But further innovation is on the horizon, this time incorporating the Ancora balloon technology with a robotic element.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“Ancora is a multi-product platform focusing on the small bowel, large bowel, stomach and esophageal regions,” Rentschler said. “Our next potential venture will be in flexible robots. We’ll continue with our balloon overtubes, but as anchoring platforms to be used with flexible robotic endoscopy systems.”</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>Until then, Rentschler and company are full steam ahead on these next products. The $4.5 million AAI grant is being offered over a four year span, but they anticipate spending that money much sooner so they can get the devices out on the market and begin positively impacting patients and physicians everywhere.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>But that’s not their only goal. With a lot of Colorado involved in the company’s revolutionizing technology, Rentschler hopes to also tell another story.</span></p><p dir="ltr"><span>“I started Aspero Medical with Dr. Steven Edmundowicz at CU Anschutz. We’ve received a number of grants from the state of Colorado and everyone involved is invested in our vision,” said Rentschler. “We believe that a rising tide raises all boats, and when we think of Aspero, we want it to be a successful Colorado story.”</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>Six years ago, Professor Mark Rentschler helped launch startup company Aspero Medical to develop a medical device used during endoscopy procedures. NAI Senior Members are active faculty, scientists and administrators who have produced technologies that have brought, or aspire to bring, real impact to the welfare of society. They are also recognized for educating and mentoring the next generation of inventors.</p><p>Rentschler’s patent success can be seen at his medical device startup <a href="https://www.asperomedical.com/" rel="nofollow">Aspero Medical</a>. The company recently <a href="/mechanical/2021/08/24/new-medical-balloon-technology-aims-improve-endoscopy-success" rel="nofollow">received a patent</a> for medical balloon technology to improve anchoring consistency in the gastrointestinal tract.&nbsp;</p><p>The PillarTM Technology are small nubs on the balloon that are made of silicone. The pillars create more friction, allowing doctors to better secure the device in the small intestine. Aspero Medical uses the micro-textured balloon in its AncoraTM Balloon Overtube for endoscopies.</p><p>Rieker’s company – <a href="https://www.longpathtech.com/" rel="nofollow">LongPath Technology</a> – has found success as well, recently being named the <a href="https://www.longpathtech.com/news/longpath-technologies-wins-colorado-photonics-company-of-the-year" rel="nofollow">2021 Colorado Photonics Company of the Year</a>. ƷSMӰƬ molecular, cellular&nbsp;and developmental biology professor <a href="/mcdb/tin-tin-su" rel="nofollow">Tin Tin Su</a> is in this year’s class as well.&nbsp;</p><p>Su is the lead inventor on three issued patents, two of which are licensed to her startup company&nbsp;<a href="https://suvica.com/" rel="nofollow">SuviCa, Inc</a>. She now serves as the company's chief scientific officer. Su’s inventions have garnered $4.5 million&nbsp;in federal contracts from the National Cancer Institute, resulting in subcontracts to five Colorado researchers at other institutions and a potential new treatment for an orphan disease.</p><p>Currently, Su is utilizing a&nbsp;$2 million&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sbir.gov/" rel="nofollow">SBIR</a> contract for SuviCa to develop an innovative screening platform–hardware and software–to identify novel radiation modulators for cancer. This system will be leveraged to generate intellectual property through partnership agreements to screen compound libraries. Each new compound identified has the potential to generate upwards of $4 million.</p><p>The NAI&nbsp;represents 37 research universities, government and non-profit research institutes. The 63 inventors are named on more than 625 issued U.S. patents.&nbsp;Rentschler, Rieker and Su are the first three inventors from ƷSMӰƬ to be inducted as Senior Members.&nbsp;</p><p>Inventors need to be nominated to receive the Senior Member standing with the NAI. The medical device startup, cofounded by Paul M. Rady Department&nbsp;of Mechanical Engineering Professor <a href="/mechanical/mark-rentschler" rel="nofollow">Mark Rentschler</a>, created a micro-textured medical balloon for endoscopies.</p><p>The new patent covers the startup company's Pillar<sup>TM&nbsp;</sup>Technology, the&nbsp;small nubs on the balloon made of silicone. The pillars are shaped and spaced out in a way that creates more friction, which allows doctors to secure the balloon in&nbsp;the small intestine. Medical balloons made by other companies are smooth and tend to slip in the mucus lining the intestine.&nbsp;Those balloons make endoscopies technically challenging and time-consuming.</p><p>"We feel like we're able to give better traction and better anchoring with less force," Rentschler explained. "Speed for the physician, deeper access for the patient, less trauma&nbsp;and full diagnosis and treatment that first time."</p><p>Balloon endoscopy is the standard to diagnose and treat small bowel disease. The balloon is inflated when inserted into the intestine, making room for a scope to move through. The procedure allows physicians to see the entire small intestine.</p><p>One of Rentschler’s goals is to “figure out a way to try to make a bigger impact with our discoveries at the bedside with the patient and the physician.” His new Pillar<sup> TM</sup> Technology helps push that mission forward.</p><h2>Engineering the micro-textured balloon&nbsp;</h2><p>Companies have tried designing balloons with texture before, but not like this. Rentschler said the&nbsp;idea in the early 2000s was to use mesh around a balloon. When the balloon was inflated, it would squish through the holes of the mesh to create nubs intended to secure the balloon.</p><p> </p><div class="align-left image_style-medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/mechanical/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/article-image/molding.jpeg?itok=QdVwJD39" width="750" height="469" alt="Pillar technology molding"> </div> </div> Rentschler's technology takes a more engineered approach using a molding design. Aspero Medical created a mold with pockets for each pillar. Silicone is injected into the mold and pushed into each hole.<p>“We wanted something super thin,” Rentschler said. “While we want the textures, we don’t want them to break. We want them to be as small as reasonably possible.”</p><p>While Rentschler pointed out that molding technology has improved in the last five years, the process to create such small pillars is not easy.</p><p>“In fall 2019, we started proving out our technology by transitioning to manufacturing and building our first micro-textured balloons at scale,” Rentschler explained. “That itself was a huge challenge. Most contract manufacturers wouldn’t even try to create these balloons with us because they didn’t think it was possible.”</p><p>Once Aspero Medical found a vendor ready for the challenge, the startup began building the balloons in spring 2020.</p><p>Rentschler created the Pillar<sup> TM</sup> Technology with Dr. Steven Edmundowicz, Aspero Medical’s chief medical officer and the medical director of the <a href="https://www.uchealth.org/locations/uchealth-digestive-health-center-anschutz/" rel="nofollow">Digestive Health Center</a>&nbsp;at the <a href="https://www.cuanschutz.edu/" rel="nofollow">University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus</a>. The foundational intellectual property was developed at the University of Colorado. The CU Board of Regents owns the patent.</p><h2>Utilizing the technology on medical products</h2><p>Aspero Medical uses the micro-textured balloon in a product the company has lined up to submit for FDA approval.</p><p>The Ancora<sup>TM</sup> Balloon Overtube attaches the pillared balloon to a silicone tube for endoscopies. Physicians move a scope through the silicone tube to visualize the digestive tract. Rentschler and Edmundowicz will apply for FDA approval this year. Rentschler said if all goes well, they expect approval three months after submitting. From there it’s commercialization.</p><p>Aspero Medical also plans to use the Pillar<sup> TM</sup> Technology on a product for colonoscopy procedure. The company intends to submit that product for FDA approval in 2022. The Pillar<sup> TM</sup> Technology is designed so that it could work with other balloons as well. That could include balloons used in cardiovascular or urology procedures.</p><p>“This product (Ancora Balloon Overtube)&nbsp;is for GI.
