If groundwater is contaminated with a degradable contaminant, degradation can be enhanced by injecting chemicals, microbes, or carbon sources into the contaminated area. To encourage the spread of the injectant throughout the contaminated area, a dipole system is often used with an injection well upstream of the contamination and a pumping well downstream of it. Unfortunately, unless the aquifer is perfectly homogeneous, the injectant will flow preferentially through the more conductive paths, leading to non-uniform spreading of the injectant. We investigate the use of pulsed dipole injection and extraction from groundwater wells as a means for increasing mixing.
