Over 2,000 American Indians and First Nation Peoples from more than 30 tribes in the United States and Canada will rendezvous at the University of Colorado Events Center in Boulder on April 4-5 for the second annual Red Nations Cultural Unity Celebration Contest Pow-wow.
A pow-wow is a cultural celebration featuring native speakers, performers, writers and artists. This year聮s event is sponsored by the CU-Boulder American Indian Student Organization Oyate (pronounced O-ya-tay).
There are 164 American Indian students enrolled on the CU-Boulder campus.
Dancers will compete for cash prizes in 26 categories. Music will be provided by Host Drums from Minnesota, New Mexico and Canada. The pow-wow will feature native arts and crafts as well as native foods. There also will be special appearances by Pageant Royalty that will include Miss Indian Colorado.
The pow-wow will run both days from 10 a.m. until 6:30 pm. The public is invited to attend. Admission is $4 for a day pass and $6 for a weekend pass. CU students, children under age 7 and adults over 60 are admitted free of charge. The proceeds from the event will go to support Oyate. For more information call Oyate at 492-8874.
