In 1945 Brooke Wunnicke graduated from the CU-Boulder School of Law. Six books and 54 years of service later, Wunnicke was recognized for her contributions to legal services in Colorado at the Colorado Bar Association聮s 101st Annual Convention held in Vail on Saturday, Sept. 25.
Wunnicke received the CBA聮s highest honor, the Award of Merit.
"I am humbled, proud and my colleagues at the Bar have given me great joy," said Wunnicke.
Wunnicke finished first in her class at CU and promptly started a solo practice in Wyoming at a time when women where not even allowed to serve on a jury. She moved to Denver in 1969 where she practiced oil and gas, real estate and securities law. She is best known as former Chief Appellate Deputy in the office of then District Attorney Dale Tooley.
Ms. Wunnicke is currently with the Denver law firm of Hall and Evans and just completed her 19th year teaching oil and gas law at the University of Denver.
Four others also received awards along with Wunnicke including:
* Doris Truhlar, who received the Donald W. Hoagland Award for her volunteer work with Metro Volunteer Lawyers, the Arapahoe County Bar Community service program and Channel 4聮s "Ask a Lawyer."
* Barbara Chamberlain was named the Pro Bono Coordinator of the Year.
* Brandon Hull was named the 1999 Young Lawyer of the Year.
* The entire 13th Judicial District Bar Association, Maggie Atkinson and Judge James Leh received the Jacob V. Shaetzel Award.
