A team of seven undergraduate engineering and business students from the University of Colorado at Boulder has been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to help draft a business plan for the future human exploration of Mars. The students wrote a proposal that was one of six selected in the NASA Means Business Student Competition to become part of the agency's strategic plan for Mars.

The Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at Boulder has received a $4.9 million grant to implement a program proven to reduce drug abuse among young adolescents. The three-year award from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, was received on Jan. 27. The grant comes on the heels of a $4 million award the office provided to the center last year.

The historically renovated Armory Building, original site of the Colorado National Guard, built in l915, will soon be home to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, CU officials announced today at a meeting of the CU-City Steering Committee, a joint City of Boulder and university coordinating group.

David L. Haberman, a nationally recognized expert on Hinduism, will deliver the inaugural Robert C. Lester Lecture on the Study of Religion next week at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "Religious Studies 2000: Lessons of a Student of Hinduism," will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in room 270 of the Hale Science Building on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Two University of Colorado biology programs have been ranked in the nation's top 10 by the Institute for Scientific Information, an organization with the most comprehensive bibliographic database of research information in the world. The results were published in a recent issue of Science Watch, which used a scientific citation-per-paper score to rank America's top 100 research universities in biological science fields. The results were based on scientific papers published by U.S. university faculty between 1993 and 1997.

The Real Estate Center at CU-Boulder’s College of Business and Administration and the National Association of Industrial Office Properties, will co-host a conference on Friday, Feb. 26, examining global real estate capital markets. "When $600 billion talks – you’d better listen!" is the theme of this year’s conference, which will be held at the downtown Denver Marriott. More than 350 real estate and development professionals are expected to attend.

Willard "Wick" Rowland, dean of the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Journalism and Mass Communication, announced today at a faculty meeting that he will be stepping aside from his 12-year administrative post at the end of the current academic year.

The largest internship fair in the West will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the University Memorial Center Glenn Miller Ballroom. Howard Rosenberg, director of the Cooperative Education/Internship Program, emphasized that the fair is for all CU-Boulder students.

A variety of new and traditional activities will be featured as part of Black Awareness Month celebrations at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Events scheduled to take place during February include gospel festivals, a Heritage film series, poetry nights, an African market place and a soul food fest. Organizers believe students, staff, faculty and community members will be enriched by the activities.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will be the site for the 22nd Annual Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government Feb. 19-21. More than 1,000 students are expected to attend. Formerly known as the Big 8 Conference, this year marks the first time that students from Texas colleges will be attending. The conference serves as a forum to address problems, concerns and ideas of black students attending Big 12 universities.
