CU-Boulder Plans Additional Safety Improvements On Campus

A number of safety improvements are in place at the University of Colorado at Boulder for the 2000-2001 school year and more are on the way. More than $300,000 in lighting improvements have been completed on the CU-Boulder campus over the past year. Another $300,000 is expected to be spent on lighting projects this year in an ongoing effort to improve campus safety, according to Jim Fadenrecht, public safety director at CU-Boulder.

Noted CU-Boulder Planetary Scientist To Talk On Past, Future Space Exploration

University of Colorado at Boulder Professor Bruce Jakosky, an internationally known space scientist, will speak on the legacy of NASAÂ’s Apollo Program and the future of human planetary exploration on Sept. 7 in the Old Main Chapel.

CU-Boulder Proposes New College Of Information Science & Technology

Richard L. Byyny, chancellor of the University of Colorado at Boulder, has proposed that a new College of Information Science and Technology be created on the Boulder campus. Byyny announced the appointment of a campus-wide committee to study the proposal at an annual faculty breakfast meeting last week. Bobby Schnabel, associate vice chancellor for campus technology, and Clayton Lewis, chair of the computer science department, will co-chair the exploratory committee.

CU-Boulder Conference To Forecast Stock Market Returns Through 2025

An investment conference sponsored by the CU-Boulder College of Business on Sept. 15-16 will evaluate the return investors can expect from the stock market for the next 25 years. The conference, held in Beaver Creek, Colo., is the only one of its kind in the nation. It is organized by the college's Burridge Center for Securities Analysis and Valuation and will feature an equal number of industry experts and university professors.

CU-Boulder Space Science Professor Cited For Excellence In Teaching With Technology

Professor Fran Bagenal of CU-BoulderÂ’s astrophysical and planetary sciences department has received the PresidentÂ’s 2000 Faculty Excellence Award for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Technology from the University of Colorado system. Established in 1998, the prestigious award goes to one faculty member annually from each of the four CU campuses. Winners are honored for their creativity using technology in teaching, their commitment to students, leadership in promoting educational technology and overall contributions to their fields.

CU Professor Emeritus Gilbert White Receives International "Millennium Award"

Gilbert White, distinguished professor emeritus of geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is the recipient of a 2000 Millennium Award from the International Water Resources Association. The six one-time awards were created to recognize outstanding contributions by individuals, institutions and programs to water resources planning and management around the world. The awards were presented at the 10th Stockholm Water Symposium in Sweden on Aug. 17.

CU-Boulder Professor To Simulate Black Hole At Fiske Planetarium

The mysteries of black holes and the bizarre phenomena associated with these extreme objects will be discussed at Fiske Planetarium on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder during Professor Andrew HamiltonÂ’s "Black Holes and Relativity" show. HamiltonÂ’s show kicks off Fiske PlanetariumÂ’s fall 2000 schedule of monthly astronomy talks. The live talks are given by CU-Boulder professors.

CALENDAR ITEM: Center Of The American West Lecture

A lecture on "Cleaning Up the West: Technology and Culture in the Restoration of Acid Mine Drainage Sites" will be presented by JoAnn Silverstein, CU-Boulder professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel. Silverstein will discuss the effects of acid mine drainage and innovative research on the use of microbial organisms to break down toxic heavy metals. The seminar also will explore the role of the mining community in implementing and monitoring these new technologies.

CU-Boulder Names Kathryn Simon New Entrepreneurship Director

Kathryn A. Simon, vice president and managing principal of Leopard Communications in Boulder, today was named director of the Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado at Boulder. CU-Boulder College of Business Dean Steven Manaster and College of Engineering Dean Ross Corotis named Simon to the post. Her appointment is effective Sept. 15, pending the approval of the chancellor.

New Judicial Practices At CU-Boulder Target Persistent Problem Drinkers

Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs at CU-Boulder, announced today that beginning this fall any student found responsible for three alcohol or drug related incidents, on- or off-campus, is subject to suspension from the university for at least one semester. "The time has come for us to take another step toward our goal of creating a safe, healthy academic community. Our history and mission require us to take such steps," according to Stump.
