Alan Cass Retires After 38-Year Career

Alan Cass, probably best known as the 聯Voice of the Buffs,聰 retired Jan. 31 as director of the Coors Events/Conference Center and assistant athletic director after a 38-year career at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Cass, who says he is 聯moving on to a different phase of university life,聰 will continue to announce CU men聮s basketball and football games, coordinate the Boulder campus聮 three annual commencement ceremonies and serve as curator for the Glenn Miller Archive, to which he has devoted nearly 20 years.

CU Student Satellite Set For Launch Feb. 4

A $5 million Earth-orbiting satellite designed and built by a team of University of Colorado at Boulder students, faculty and engineers is currently slated for launch from California聮s Vandenberg Air Force Base on Feb. 4.

CU-Boulder Offers New Way To Protect Student Privacy

In response to student feedback, the University of Colorado at Boulder has developed a new 聯limited-privacy聰 option for students who don聮t want their names and addresses released for use in directories or mass mailings. Effective Feb. 2, students will be able to protect themselves from mass mailings while continuing to allow public access to certain kinds of information if they select the 聯limited-privacy聰 option for their records maintained by the campus.

Do-It-Yourself Physics Fun Offered At CU-Boulder Website

Physics doesn't have to be boring and a new site on the World Wide Web featuring cartoon characters and action-filled experiments aims to prove it. The site was developed by physics professors at the University of Colorado at Boulder and is intended for non-scientists and students of all ages. It allows users to conduct more than 30 interactive "virtual experiments" on their computer screens and then get an explanation of what they are seeing.

Fiske Planetarium Examines Phenomenon Of Distant Worlds

But why has it taken so long for astronomers to verify the existance of other worlds, suspected since long before recorded time? The discovery of several new planets beyond our solar system during the last two years will be the topic of a new star show at Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The University of Colorado Libraries聮 new web-based catalog, Webcat, has made CU-Boulder a leader in providing access to its print, multi-media and CD-ROM resources. 聯No other library has put its entire catalog on the World Wide Web for everyone to access,聰 said Lori Arp, head of the reference department at Norlin Library. With 1.7 million records, the catalog provides information about the University of Colorado Libraries聮 12 million print, media and CD-ROM resources. Media resources include audio-video materials, microfiche and microfilm.

CU School Of Law Sponsors Forum On Crime And Violence

The School of Law at the University of Colorado will sponsor a day-long symposium titled Crime is Not the Problem: Lethal Violence in America. The forum will be from 8:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Fleming Law Building. The content was inspired by a book by the same name written by Franklin Zimring and Gordon Hawkins. The public is invited to register for the symposium, which is $65 prior to Feb. 14 and $75 thereafter, by calling Debra Sparn at 492-6145.

Study Shows High-Tech Conveniences May Hurt Customer Service, Satisfaction

When a customer had a technical question about his answering machine, he used the Internet to find the manufacturer's contact information. Yahoo offered him access to the company聮s site, but when he clicked on that choice, he found himself at a sex site. The customer called the manufacturer to report the Internet problem, and the representative chuckled. They had known about the mix-up for a week. Amusing? Not when you think of the potential impact on the manufacturer's image, according to CU-Boulder marketing Professor Tom Duncan.
