Downtown Boulder businessman’s gift sparks $2 million CU Opera endowment

Longtime Boulder resident Paul N. Eklund has made a transformative gift to the opera program at the College of Music at the ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ that, combined with additional university commitments, establishes a $2 million endowment for the program, to be renamed the Eklund Family Opera Program in honor of the gift.

NASA’s newest orbiter at Mars, MAVEN, took precautions to avoid harm from a dust-spewing comet that flew near Mars yesterday and is studying the flyby’s effects on the Red Planet’s atmosphere, according to ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ Professor Bruce Jakosky, principal investigator on the mission.

Not everybody or everything makes it to 100, but the ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ Homecoming is about to reach that centennial mark. On Nov. 7, 1914, CU took on Utah to win 33-0 in the first Homecoming featuring an intercollegiate matchup. This year, from Oct. 22 to 25, CU-Boulder will host hundreds of guests at dozens of major events. In addition to the traditional football game and parade, the celebration will include a concert, an alumni lecture series, affinity reunions and college and school gatherings.

Past research shows physical beauty can be detrimental to women applying for masculine jobs. But belles can put the brakes on discrimination by acknowledging their looks during an interview, according to a new study led by the ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ. The paper, published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes , is the first to provide a method for curtailing such prejudice against attractive women.

CU-Boulder National Education Policy Center launches project to recognize top high schools

A ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ research center will recognize public schools for what they do to give all students the chance to succeed, rather than turning to test scores to determine school quality. The Schools of Opportunity project is now seeking applications from public high schools in Colorado and New York. Next year, the project will expand to include schools nationwide, recognizing schools that use research-based practices to close the opportunity gaps that result in unequal opportunities to learn, in school and beyond school.
