Early on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 22, a power interruption adversely affected one of the main campus boilers, causing a two hour period where there was a significant drop in steam pressure used to heat some buildings. During this time, as outdoor temperatures were sinking to 10 degrees below zero, pipes and water coils in a number of older research facilities froze, which subsequently caused some flooding. In addition to the steam loss, other buildings suffered frozen exterior pipes and other negative effects of the extremely cold temperatures.听听
Facilities Management acted quickly to mitigate the damage but some buildings are still impacted as restoration crews work to repair affected areas. There is no definitive timeline for this work to be completed but it is expected to continue throughout the next week.听听
The impacted buildings include:
- Administrative and Research Center (ARCE) Annex
- Bruce Curtis Building (MCOL)
- Clare Small Arts and Sciences (CLRE)
- Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES)
- Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry (CHEM)
- Ekeley Sciences Building (EKLC)
- Electrical Engineering (ECEE)
- Fleming Building (FLMG)
- Gold Biosciences Building (GOLD)
- Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory (ITLL)
- Porter Biosciences (PORT)
- Stadium 140
If you work in these buildings and haven鈥檛 been notified yet, please contact your supervisor or building proctor for information on specific workplace impacts.听听
