CU-Boulder Launches Search For Communications Director

The University of Colorado at Boulder has begun a national search for a new executive director of university communications, a position vacated in early July by the departure of Bobbi Barrow who left the university to join Denver Health. Ric Porreca, senior vice chancellor and chief financial officer at CU-Boulder, has been named chair of the search committee. Porreca said the campus is in the process of selecting members to serve on the search committee, which will begin work immediately. He expects a new executive director will be named during the fall semester.

CU Science Workshop For K-12 Teachers Under Way In Mountains West Of Boulder

Twenty-five elementary and high school science teachers entered a dream laboratory of forests, ponds, streams and wildlife northwest of Boulder July 27 to begin a week of living and breathing Earth science. The teachers are participating in Earthworks, an annual professional development program sponsored by CU-Boulder's Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, or CIRES.

CU-Boulder Seeking Requests From Community Organizations And K-12 Schools For New 'Wish List' Project

Faculty and students at the University of Colorado at Boulder may soon be granting wishes for Colorado schools and nonprofit and community organizations as part of a new program called the Wish List. In an effort to encourage academic partnerships with Colorado communities, CU-Boulder is compiling a list of needs and requests from around the state. The Wish List will serve as a resource for faculty and academic programs that want to incorporate experiential learning opportunities into the course curriculum.

Final CU-Boulder Summer Commencement Ceremony Slated For Aug. 10

The University of Colorado at Boulder will confer 1,177 degrees during the university's final summer commencement ceremony Saturday, Aug. 10, at 8:30 a.m. on the Norlin Quadrangle. Last winter, the Council of Deans, associate deans, Chancellor Richard L. Byyny and the commencement committee agreed to eliminate the CU-Boulder August commencement ceremony beginning in 2003, according to Jeanne McDonald, commencement coordinator. "This decision was made due to the low number of participants we have had at the August ceremony," McDonald said.

Arapaho Tribes To Gather For Annual Pow-Wow Festival July 28 At CU-Boulder

Northern and Southern Arapaho tribe members will gather for the 'coming back home' pow-wow or "Ce'no'eeckoohuut" beginning at 10 a.m. July 28 on the Norlin Quad at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "The pow-wow works to strengthen the bond between CU-Boulder and the Arapaho Tribe and promotes an excellent cultural education opportunity for everyone," said Leslee Caballero, co-coordinator for CU-Boulder's American Indian Student Services.

Two CU-Boulder Chefs Win Bronze Medals At National Culinary Conference

Two CU-Boulder chefs took home bronze medals in the "mystery basket" competition at the national Chef Culinary Conference held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Paul Houle of the University Club and David Kambic of Sewall Hall won their awards in an event that gave the chefs four hours to prepare a full meal with ingredients that were not revealed until the competition began.

Freshman Work With Nobel Prize Winners As Part Of CU-Boulder Research Program

Two University of Colorado at Boulder freshmen are starting their college research careers by working for Nobel Prize-winning professors as part of a program designed to attract top students to the university. Edwin Eng and Kevin Chang, who will begin classes at CU-Boulder in the fall, are among 30 students taking advantage of the university's Summer Undergraduate Research Experience program. Eng and Chang are assisting in research projects for professors Carl Wieman and Eric Cornell, winners of the 2001 Nobel Prize in physics.
