The Center of the American West at the University of Colorado at Boulder will host a lecture titled, "Letters from the Wild, Wild East: A Roman PoetÂ’s Life on the Frontier" on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Old Main Chapel on campus. The talk is free and open to the public. Peter Knox, CU professor and chair of the department of classics, will discuss the Roman poet OvidÂ’s exile in the year A.D. 8 on the shores of the Black Sea in the city of Tomi, which Greek settlers founded in the sixth century B. C.

CU Board Of Regents To Consider Mediation Proposal For Grandview Redevelopment

Leonid Meteor Shower To Be Visible In Colorado Nov. 14-21

The Leonid meteor shower, an annual celestial event, will be visible in night skies throughout Colorado for about a week in mid-November. The meteors will be active Nov. 14 to Nov. 21, with peak viewing falling at about 1 a.m. on Nov. 18, when about 100 to 200 meteors per hour could be visible, according to experts at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

CU-Boulder Receives EPA Climate Protection Award

The University of Colorado Environmental Center has been awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection AgencyÂ’s 2000 Climate Protection Award for its student-led effort to make CU-Boulder a model for university efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CU-Boulder was the only university among 19 international companies, organizations and individuals presented with the award at an Oct. 31 ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Earthworks Receives Award From Colorado Alliance For Environmental Education

Earthworks, a program of the University of Colorado at Boulder, has received an environmental education partnership award from the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education in the Higher Education category. An outreach program of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), Earthworks helps middle and high school teachers transfer new science content and teaching strategies into the classroom, said Alex Weaver, director of the CIRES K-12 Outreach Program.

Andrea Larson Joins CU-Boulder Ombuds Office

Andrea Larson has joined the University of Colorado at Boulder Ombuds Office as a half-time associate ombudsperson, Director Tom Sebok announced. Mary Chavez, the current associate ombudsperson, has reduced her appointment to half time in order to spend more time with her daughter and work on her doctoral dissertation. Larson also will continue to serve as counselor-in-residence in the Williams Village residence halls, a joint program sponsored by the CU-Boulder Housing Department and Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center.

Fiske Planetarium Examines Distant Planets, Stars On Nov. 10

For centuries people have attempted to prove the existence of planets circling distant stars, but on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at Boulder will explore the topic more closely than ever before. "Searching For Distant Worlds," a prerecorded program at Fiske Planetarium, will explain recent discoveries of unknown of planets in newfound solar systems. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m. the night of the show with prices ranging from $4 for adults and $3 for seniors age 65 and over and children, 12 and under.
