Stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscope with improved resolution

Problem

Super-resolution microscopy and lithography are vital to understand, prevent, and treat disease, as well as in the fundamental pursuit of smaller and higher performance electronic and photonic components. Existing super-resolution imaging systems require bulky, fixed microscopes that are a non-starter for live animal imaging and cannot provide the spatial and temporal resolution of stimulated emission depletion (STED).

Solution

Together with a team of innovators, developed a fiber-based STED microscope that achieves super resolution while maintaining a compact footprint. In contrast to other imaging technologies and instruments, the proposed fiber-coupled STED microscope will allow sub-100 nm resolution imaging of awake behaving animals that is a leap above the capabilities of other super-resolution techniques. This instrument is fundamentally different in imaging potential, and it will be the first instrument of its type in the world.

Market Application

This has potential applications for in vivo animal studies, endoscopy, optical patterning, and nanoscale spectroscopy.
