Xiaodong (Sergey) Yan (He/Him/His) is a doctoral student in the Department of Communication at University of Colorado Boulder. He holds a B.A. (major in The Art of Announcing and Anchoring) from , China, and an M.A. (major in Communication) from , China. His master鈥檚 dissertation, supervised by , focused on the gender-based opinion confrontation in China鈥檚 digital public sphere and examined the causes and consequences of the polarization of public opinion on gender issues through the lens of civility and emotion, using 鈥淐hina three-child policy鈥� as a case study.

His current academic interest lies in sexuality/gender, political discourse, identity inequality, and hate/violence in communication science. More specifically, his current research work is dedicated to exploring: 1) the dynamics of 鈥渟exuality/gender鈥� in interpersonal/political communication, e.g., gendered communication in political discourse, sexual shame and reproductive stigma in Communication, digital violence/hate speech against marginalized minorities. 2) the mediating role of 鈥渆merging media technologies鈥� in the quality of communication, e.g., the use of emerging media technologies to promote deliberative democracy, rationalize collective decision-making, and guide scientific (de-stigmatizing) understanding of public perceptions of sexuality/gender or reproduction.
