Friendships between artists inspire creativity, spur collaborations, and foster networks of support. Featuring artwork from CUAM’s collection, Hello Friend highlights the friendships between artists who lived and worked in shared creative circles in the mid to late 1900s.
Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Jim Rosenquist and Jack Youngerman lived and worked in the same neighborhood in Manhattan, while Joan Brown, Elizabeth Murray, Manuel Neri and Deborah Remington were part of an artistic community around the San Francisco Bay. Closer to home, Dale Chisman, Clark Richert, and Betty and George Woodman all have deep ties to ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ.Ìý
Hello Friend has a double meaning:Ìýmany of the artworks on view have not been exhibited in ten or more years, while others are recent acquisitions. Paired artworks by New York-based artists Jackie Winsor and Martin Puryear demonstrate stylistic resonances across decades. Favorite artworks from the collection are re-introduced, inviting a new generation of visitors to encounter these works for the first time.
Hello Friend is generously supported by ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ student Arts and Cultural Enrichment fees and CU Art Museum members. The museum acknowledges the collaborative effort of all museum staff in presenting this exhibition: Pedro Caceres, Elizabeth van der Marck-Gregg, Stephen Martonis, Maggie Mazzullo, and our team of museum attendants. This exhibition is curated by Hope Saska.
