Tour of Our Solar System

Embark on an immersive journey through our solar system, from the huge mountains on Mars to the swirling clouds of Jupiter and more! We’ll explore the similarities and differences that exist between planets and what that can tell us about how our solar system formed.

  • Beyond Human Vision - Explore the world of light and how it applies to our Solar System through demonstrations comparing the vision of humans, other animals, and telescopes.
  • Scale Model Solar System -ÌýStudents will explore the vast distances in space by creating a pocket solar system and going on a guided tour of our outdoor scale model solar system (weather permitting).
  • Science on a Sphere -ÌýWith our 5-foot hanging sphere, students will discover the similarities and differences of various planets, moons, and other objects in our Solar System.
  • Science through ShadowsÌý- Students will safely observe the Sun, explore moon phases, and learn about eclipses with our live demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Water is found in the ocean, rivers, lakes, and ponds. Water exists as solid ice and in liquid form.

Rainfall helps to shape the land and affects the types of living things found in a region. Water, ice, wind, living organisms, and gravity break rocks, soils, and sediments into smaller particles and move them around.

The locations of mountain ranges, deep ocean trenches, ocean floor structures, earthquakes, and volcanoes occur in patterns. Most earthquakes and volcanoes occur in bands that are often along the boundaries between continents and oceans. Major mountain chains form inside continents or near their edges. Maps can help locate the different land and water features areas of Earth.

Film (30Ìýminutes):ÌýDestination Mars: The New Frontier

Live TalkÌý(30Ìýminutes):ÌýTopics include the night sky tonight, including planet motions, andÌýSolar System composition

Themed Activity Add-OnsÌý(30 minutes each, max 25 students each):ÌýÌýÌý

The solar system consists of the sun and a collection of objects, including planets, their moons, and asteroids that are held in orbit around the sun by its gravitational pull on them.

Film (30Ìýminutes):ÌýDestination Mars: The New Frontier

Live TalkÌý(30Ìýminutes):ÌýTopics include the night sky tonight, including planet motions, processes on planetary surfaces, and Solar System formation and orbits

The solar system appears to have formed from a disk of dust and gas, drawn together by gravity.

Kepler’s laws describe common features of the motions of orbiting objects, including their elliptical paths around the sun. Orbits may change due to the gravitational effects from, or collisions with, other objects in the solar system.
