French Major Course Requirements

Courses

Students may begin acquiring major credit hours as early as:

  • FREN 2120 - Second-year French Grammar Review and Reading 2 (3 credit hours)
    • This course is the prerequisite for all upper-division courses in French

Students may enroll in the courses below while or after working their way through the first two years of French-language instruction.

  • One FREN class taught in English at the 1000 level (3 credit hours)
  • One FREN class taught in English at the 3000 level (3 credit hours)
  • A FREN Global Seminar (3 credit hours)

FREN 2120 is the prerequisite for all 3000-level courses taught in French. After completing or testing out of FREN 2120, students will complete the Advanced French requirement by completingÌý2 of the 3Ìýadvanced French course options:

  • FREN 3010 - French Phonetics and Pronunciation (3 credit hours)
  • FREN 3050 - French Composition (3 credit hours)
  • FREN 3100 - Critical Reading and Writing in French Literature (3 credit hours)

The remaining classes will consist of upper-division elective courses in French. These can include:

  • The remaining course of the 3 upper-division course options (3010; 3050; 3100)
  • The department’s regularly taught 3000-level courses taught in French.
  • A FREN global seminar.

Majors are required to take at least one class at the 4100 level or above. This requirement should be fulfilledÌýafterÌýthe advanced French requirement has been satisfied. Exceptions may be made in certain cases (depending on the level of proficiency and scheduling needs) that would allow a student to enroll in a 4100-level course concurrently with the first or second of their advanced French course options. The 4100 course requirement should be fulfilled at CU rather than through a study abroad program.

Majors, and only majors, have the option of completing a personalized capstone project under the supervision of a faculty advisor. This is an independent study worth 3 credit hours. In exceptional circumstances, a capstone project can be used to replace the 4100-level requirement. If a major decides to pursue a capstone project, it should be done in the student’s final year, or last two semesters, of study.

The requirements for the major are met once the student has completed a total of 30 approved credit hours, regardless of the pathway to get there.
