Fabrication FAQ

If you're feeling a bit unsure of how to begin, schedule a meeting with Becky Komarek to help you get started.

Whether you have an idea and you're not quite sure how to start developing it, or if you have questions about which sort of manufacturing is best for what you have in mind, Becky can help you get pointed in the right direction.

The answer to this question depends on what sort of fabrication you are doing.

We maintain a stock of some 3D printing filaments, wood, thread, etc., but you'll want to check in with the shop that you're using to see what we have and what you'll need to bring in.

  • For 3D printing, it is printer dependant - check in with Pat Maguire.
  • For Laser Cutting, you'll need to bring in your own material.
  • For Machining, you'll need to bring in your own material. Please discuss your material purchase with Greg or Chase before placing the order.
  • For Woodworking, you may bring in your own material. No dirty or pressure-treated lumber. A small selection of remnant lumber and plywood are also available free-of-charge.
  • For Welding, you'll need to bring in your own material, but we'll provide the welding consumables. Please discuss your material purchase with Greg or Chase before placing the order.

For your basic pretotyping needs, we maintain a supply of various materials (cardboard, hot glue, string, etc.) in the Pretotyping Cabinet in the Commons.

If you are a student working on course work, Idea Forge only charges for the cost of materials.
