The spring 2024 session of Mini Law school is officially underway. Each semester, this 6-week series provides an excellent lifelong-learning opportunity and a great taste of what law school is like.听听
鈥淢ini law school is an opportunity for nonlawyers to learn from our law professors鈥 expertise,鈥 said Matthew Cushing, Director of Executive and Community Learning Programs. 鈥淚t is a great avenue for those who are curious about law school to learn more.鈥澨
The online-only series taking place this spring features lectures on the United States Supreme Court's 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 terms and the important cases before the Court. Participants who view at least four of the six sessions receive a Mini Law School Certificate (no academic credit is received for participation).听听听
鈥淥ver the last year and continuing through this current term (ending June 2024), the Supreme Court has taken up and decided (or will decide) some critical issues that impact almost everyone in the country, from voting rights to the freedom of speech,鈥 Cushing shared. 鈥淚 thought it would be a great topic听to bring together lectures on a wide variety of issues, all of which the Supreme Court has touched upon recently, from our amazing scholars here at Colorado Law.鈥澨
Some of this session鈥檚 topics include 鈥淭he Case that could Unravel the Tax System,鈥 with Prof. Sloan Speck; 鈥淚ndigenous Peoples, Native Nations, and the Supreme Court: Current Cases and How We Got Here,鈥 with Prof. Christina Stanton; and 鈥淩ights for the Right,鈥 with Prof. Scott Skinner-Thompson.听鈥
鈥淚 hope that participants will come to learn a little bit more about the Supreme Court and its inner workings, as well as to appreciate how pivotal a role the Supreme Court is playing right now in deciding issues that impact almost everyone鈥檚 lives in one way or another,鈥 Cushing said.听听
Individuals will be able to participate in鈥疢ini Law School this spring鈥痠n two鈥痺ays: (1) livestreaming the lecture anywhere in the country, from approximately 6听to 7:30 pm MDT on the night of the lecture; or鈥(2) on-demand at any time of your choosing, beginning approximately 2鈥痙ays after the live lecture.鈥 All participants can watch any lectures they miss live by watching a recording at their convenience at a later date.听
There are no required readings, tests, or homework assignments - just a great way to better understand some of the most critical aspects of the legal system!听
