GROW

GROW or GrassRoots On-site Work is an annual internship

During the summer, 3-5 ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ HEAL members travel to Nepal to intern with Himalayan HealthCare (HHC). While in Nepal, interns assist on many running HHC projects. In recent years this has included conducting interviews about the One Home One Toilet Project, helping choose recipients for the Midwife Training Scholarship program, and identifying ways to improve the One Home One Kitchen Garden project through community discussions. This internship is instrumental in allowing our chapter to build meaningful relationships with HHC that promote learning and anti-oppressive practices. Back on campus, the GROW interns share their learning with the chapter as a whole to equip them with the firsthand knowledge to be improved advocates for their partner in all chapter activities.

What do we do in Nepal?

In Nepal, we gather information to see if the projects that we are working on are truly benefiting the citizens. We also observe where our money is going and how it is being used. While in Nepal, we experience life in Dhading so we can better support HHC and the people in Dhading.

"Within one month we witnessed the happiness and kindness that permeated the village of Sertung-the smiles, the greetings, the endless cups of teas we shared after being invited into strangers' homes. Every day as we walked and walked, taking in the smells of fresh air and livestock, we witnessed the ongoing of what I could only feel like was inner peace. "

-Cory Wong, Grow Intern 2019
