The National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder will soon be distributing information collected by the Terra satellite, NASAÂ’s premier Earth Observing System spacecraft launched in December 1999. Terra is the first satellite to monitor how EarthÂ’s atmosphere, land, ocean, snow and ice cover, solar radiation and life influence the planet on a daily, global scale, according to NASA officials. Carrying five instruments, Terra is giving scientists a comprehensive view of Earth as a system and monitoring its long-term health.

The Student Organization for Alumni Relations at the University of Colorado at Boulder presented four faculty members with its 39th annual Teaching Recognition Awards. The awards are the only faculty honors that are selected and administered by CU-Boulder undergraduate students. The awards were presented April 13 in a ceremony at the Koenig Alumni Center.

University of Colorado at Boulder Campus Architect Bill Deno has been accepted into the distinguished College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Deno was one of 83 newly elected members out of 269 candidates to receive the designation for this year. Curt Dale of Anderson Mason Dale Architects joins Deno as the only other Colorado fellow elected this year. The investiture ceremony will be held at the national convention of the AIA in Philadelphia on May 4.

University of Colorado at Boulder alumnus Jim Voss is slated to make his fourth journey into the heavens April 24 when NASA's space shuttle Atlantis blasts off from Cape Kennedy, Fla. Slated for launch at approximately 2:15 p.m. MST, the shuttle -- carrying a seven-person crew -- is set to dock with the International Space Station and unload more than 2,000 pounds of cargo. The crew also will perform maintenance tasks onboard to ensure the space station remains in good condition as its orbital assembly continues later this year.
