Scholarships available for student leaders and UMC student employees

The UMC Board awards scholarships of up to $1,000 each year.

The James E. Schafer Scholarship is for CU student leaders who currently involved* in a Center for Student Involvement-recognized student group or organization.

The Carlos García UMC Director’s Scholarship is for students currently employed* by the Basic Needs Center, Center for Student Involvement, CU Book Store, CU Collegiate Recovery Community, Cultural Events Board, Distinguished Speakers Board, Environmental Center, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Ink Spot, Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Relations, Radio 1190, Starbucks, University Memorial Center or Volunteer Resource Center.

   Applications will open in January 2025.

   Only complete applications will be considered for scholarships. Completion of the application, three essay questions and one letter of recommendation is required.


2024 Carlos García UMC Director’s Scholarship Application

For student currently employed in the UMC, as listed above.

As the heart of campus, the UMC supports students’ academic success by providing opportunities for student involvement, leadership development, and entertainment in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Requirements

  • Current* ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ student in good standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA (will be verified by staff).
  • Currently enrolled* for at least nine credit hours (at least six credit hours for grad students).
  • Currently employed* by the Center for Student Involvement, CU Book Store, CU Collegiate Recovery Center, Cultural Events Board, Distinguished Speakers Board, Environmental Center, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Ink Spot, Off-Campus Housing & Neighborhood Relations, Radio 1190, Starbucks, UMC or Volunteer Resource Center.
    • Minimum of one semester’s employment, paid by department payroll.
    • Official start date, as recorded in the department’s payroll system such as Kronos or MyLeave, must be on or before Oct. 15, 2023.
    • Must be a current employee of the department through the time the scholarship is awarded.
  • Completion of three essay questions.
  • Submission of one letter of recommendation.

  1. Complete the application for the 2024 Carlos García UMC Director’s Scholarship. Applications are due by Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:59 p.m.
  2. Invite your recommender to complete the Director’s Scholarship recommendation form and upload their recommendation letter. Recommendation letters are due by Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:59 p.m.

2024 James E. Schafer Scholarship Application

For those involved in a CUSG-recognized student group.

¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ alum James E. Schafer was a respected and vocal advocate for students, and an active supporter of student government during his 23-year tenure as director of the UMC.

Requirements

  • Current* ¾«Æ·SMÔÚÏßӰƬ student in good standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA (will be verified by staff).
  • Currently enrolled* for at least nine credit hours (at least six credit hours for grad students).
  • Currently involved* in a Center for Student Involvement-recognized student group or organization (minimum involvement of one semester).
  • Completion of three essay questions.
  • Submission of one letter of recommendation.
