Transport to and from the Workshop Site

A student or faculty driver will pick you at at the Marriott Hotel for . A driver will also take you back to the hotel after the workshop聽day is done.聽Your聽driver will meet you in the lobby. On the first day (Friday, April 7), pick up will be at 8:15 AM, and聽on the second day (Saturday, April 8), pick up will be at 8:45 AM. Check this list to find out who your driver is. Your driver will also have your name and will be looking for you in the lobby.聽

Sustenance during the Workshop Day

There will be a morning and afternoon 'light meal' break聽each day (see the schedule). Coffee and tea will be available through the workshop day.聽At lunch time, participants will dine at the Center for Community dining commons. (You will receive a lunch ticket聽each day.)聽The Tree House Room (near the Persian food station) has been reserved for our group for both lunches.聽

Dinner Venues

  • The聽workshop dinner on Friday, April 7th will take place at 7:30 PM at聽a beautiful new Boulder farm-to-table restaurant,聽, 909 Walnut Street. Arcana is about 2 miles from the Marriott Hotel. There is a (the Bolt). You are also encouraged to take Uber or Lyft and submit your receipt.
  • The workshop dinner on Saturday, April 8th will take place at 7 PM at 聽(2525 Arapahoe Avenue), an organic Southwestern restaurant. Zolo is a very short walk from the Mariott Hotel (both are in the Arapahoe Village shopping/dining complex).聽聽

The Campus and City of Boulder

Founded in 1876, the聽聽(CU) is the major research institution in the state. Boulder's extensive walking and cycling paths and its convenient and ecological聽聽make it easy to get around town. In addition to the University of Colorado, Boulder hosts premier scientific research agencies including the聽, the聽聽and the聽.

Lodging

Workshop participants will stay at the 聽(2660 Canyon Blvd)聽the nights of April 6-8, 2017. Located near Boulder's main artery, Twenty Eighth Street (also known as US 36), this聽is a newer hotel with 175 boutique-style rooms and efficient desk personnel. Here is the Boulder Marriott located on .聽The Boulder Marriott offers mountain views,聽an indoor pool, fitness center, a spa (Essentiels Day Spa) and easy access to numerous shops, including the Twenty Ninth Street shopping promenade immediately to the east. Within steps of the Marriott you will find the Village Shops, including聽Sprouts grocery, Zolo southwestern restaurant, the famous McGuckin's hardware, Grand Rabbit's聽toy store, Changes in Latitude Travel Store, Aspen Eyewear, a shoe repair shop, a dry cleaner聽and the Buff restaurant. The hotel is within walking distance of the Center for Community, the workshop venue on campus聽(it is about .9 miles away). We will offer rides to participants who choose not to walk between the hotel and campus, as well as rides each night between the workshop dinner venue and the Marriott.聽

Getting to Boulder

We ask you to book your own flight聽to Denver International Airport (DEN, known locally as DIA). We will reimburse you via check or bank transfer after聽your travel is completed. Please retain your air ticket itinerary/invoice showing amount paid; we will collect that from you.聽From DIA you will board the , which will take you directly聽to the Boulder Marriott (and back to DIA on your day of departure). The ride is about 45 minutes each way. Once we know your times of arrival and depature, you will reserve your Greenride shuttle directly on the . Although the web page mentions 'fare quotes' you will not be charged for this service.聽Greenride outbound shuttles from DIA load on Level 5 (Main Level/ Baggage Claim Level), between Doors 507 and 509, Island 5, beneath the 鈥淪pecial Permit鈥 signs. This is on the East (BLUE) side of the Terminal. Door 507 is next to baggage carousel 3. The Greenride聽departs DIA at :35 after the hour between 4:30 AM聽(there is no 5:35 AM) and 12:35 AM (there is no 11:35 PM). Since聽you will have a confirmed reservation, you will proceed directly to the Greenride loading area. However, there is a Greenride booth聽located inside the Terminal on Level 5 to provide walk-up ticketing or assistance. The Greenride shuttle will also pick you up at the Marriott and bring you back to DIA for your departing flight.聽

Before Arriving in Boulder

April weather

April brings tulips to Boulder but also some . Conditions can range聽range from warm sunshine to showers to spring snow. The historic April daytime temperature聽average is 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17聽C). Nights are substantially colder聽(historic average of 36 degrees Fahrenheit or 2聽C).聽Participants are advised to bring a coat but also sunhat, sunscreen and sunglasses. On average, there are聽245聽sunny days per year in Boulder, and with low humidity, our sunshine can be intense.聽

Altitude

Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness is an ailment that affects people traveling at or above 8,000 ft (2,400 m) above sea level. While Boulder and its surrounding areas are located well under this altitude at 5,344 ft (1,629 m), it is not uncommon for the visitors to experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness. It may affect each person a little differently, but in general they include: headaches, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite聽and difficulty sleeping.

In order to prevent these symptoms we recommend two simple prevention techniques. First, drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. We'll have a continuous supply of liquids at the workship!聽We advise you also to carry a bottle of water. (Tap water is quite drinkable and safe in Boulder!)聽Second, take it easy and rest when you can.
