Doctoral studentsÌýsubmit two distinct kinds of research papers, both of whichÌýare judged as passing or failing by a committee: theÌýpreliminary paperÌý(submitted in the third semester of study)Ìýand theÌýsynthesis paper (submitted by the end of the sixth semester of study). The synthesis paper is the first stage of the two-stageÌýcomprehensive exam, which also requires a defense of the thesis proposal. Once the comprehensive exam is passed, the student is advanced to candidacy for the doctoral degree.
