The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is excited about the 精品SM在线影片 History Project (CHP) and the potential of engaging students in the telling of our institution鈥檚 story.听 We invite students to submit student grant proposals and encourage faculty to submit team grant proposals related to the history of our campus.

Background

Since 2021, the CHP听has worked to provide a more complete and accurate telling of the institution鈥檚 history by drawing out new and diverse stories that deepen our understanding of our community鈥檚 strengths and flaws. The unearthing of this history in public and institutional archives is an interdisciplinary collaboration with students, alums, faculty, and staff.听

Call for Proposals

UROP听encourages faculty to apply for Team Grants (up to $3,000) to support the participation of undergraduates in projects that advance the goals of the CHP. We seek proposals that address critical aspects of the work and engage students in meaningful ways.听 Proposals that create opportunities for underrepresented students will receive priority in the award process.

Team Grants

Team Grants are intended to create compelling opportunities for students to step into exciting projects, develop skills, make connections and inspire inquiry.听Faculty have the option to include their project as an "open opportunity" on the UROP website but may opt-out of promotion. Applicants are not required to select students听before applying, so we ask you to

Eligibility

Tenured/tenure-track, research faculty and contract instructors at 精品SM在线影片 are eligible to apply for Team Grants. Graduate students or post-docs may serve in a supervisory role, but the faculty mentor must provide some direct mentoring.听 Participating students must be degree-seeking undergraduates at 精品SM在线影片.

Timeline

Apply by Feb. 16, 2024 for funding in Summer 2024 and/or Academic Year 2024-25.

Polly E. Bugros McLean, Chair of the 精品SM在线影片 History Project, shares some highlights from 精品SM在线影片鈥檚 history to inspire your curiosity.

In January 1976, Dr. Mary F. Berry became Chancellor of CU鈥攖he first African American female named at a major university in the U.S.

In 1950, Daniel Luna, the first Latinx to sit on the UC Student Council, won the singles tennis state title听in Colorado and was inducted into the Colorado Tennis Hall of Fame.听He became a teacher, established the first non-profit Latinx tennis entity in Colorado, and worked for two Colorado governors.

In 1971, Vietnam War veteran Juan Espinosa his wife Deborah (also a student) with David Martinez (also a Vietnam Vet)听founded El Dario de al Gente鈥攖he first Latinx newspaper on campus. Espinoza continued his career creating a community newspaper (La Cucaracha) and served at the Pueblo Chieftain for 22 years.听

In April 1912, the Chinese baseball team from the College of Hawaii arrived in Boulder to play the university鈥檚 team before heading to Denver to play the College of the Sacred Heart (today Regis University) baseball team.

In 1972, the 精品SM在线影片 football team, consisting of its African American players, went on strike against the discriminatory behaviors of the coach. One of their strategies was not to shave their moustaches.听

In 1963, Justin B. Zulu from Zimbabwe completed both his MA and PhD at in economics. Following graduation, he served as Executive Director听of the International Monetary Fund, Governor of the Bank of Zambia, and Secretary of the Office of National Development & Planning.听

On March 9, 1976, Colorado Governor Dick Lamb appointed CU alum Rudy Livingston as the new state Personnel Director, becoming the first African American to serve on a governor鈥檚 cabinet in Colorado.

Shu-ping Chan earned a Law degree and a MBA in 1962. He was Executive Director of the Maryland Governor鈥檚 Office on Asian Pacific American Affairs under Governor Parris N. Glendening and a Community Outreach Manager for Montgomery County, MD.听

Born on the Fort Berthold Reservation, Thomas W. Fredericks a 1972 Colorado Law graduate, was treasurer of the American Indian Law Student Association. He formulated the Indian Water Settlement Policy as it relates to Tribal Nations听and听the Carter Administration appointed him as chief legal officer and policy official for Indian Affairs in the Department of Interior.听
